Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Apparently 8K RA'd in last round

So according to this source, apparently it was 8K people that were broomed aside in the last RA.

H1Bs are primarily used for several reason:

  • to replace older, more expensive, less enthusiastic employees
  • to help facilitating and transitioning the offshoring of jobs to India using native language and knowledge transfer

As a result, H1B jobs are safe during layoffs.
Alvind only cares about reporting good numbers to Wall Street so he can keep his high compensation job. He doesn’t feel any loyalty to IBMers; it’s just a business

@3hdm

Please don't expect everyone to think the same way as you do - when Alvind is laying off people, the first in line to go are those from the USA and Europe because of his so called quest to keep costs down. Even if cheaper AI does a better job at making things efficient, Alvind will continue to hire more worthless engineers in India to keep his promise to Modi to create more positions and move jobs to India.

Alvind's US citizenship should be revoked by the US State Department because he shows ZERO loyalty to America, and he has demonstrated this multiple times. The only loyalty he has is to himself and his oversized yearly bonus. So why do we need more H1B visaholders at IBM USA ? If they can do the job in India, why are they needed here ?

maybe "blockchain" and "metaverse" can make a comeback with "smart" and "IoT"

There will be more cuts in 2025 and 2026 and these do NOT include the AI scheme.

I agree AK said we are in the early innings, BUT that doesn’t mean the innings only apply to NA and Northern Europe. India was the beneficiary of the outsourcing, but they are also the target of AI automation, as there are few NA or Northern Europeans left in place to get. AI will replace repetitive tasks and most of those tasks are being performed in lower cost countries. Just because IBM didn’t make the jump to AI instantly, but rather jumped to low price labor instead, doesn’t mean they will not pursue labor replacement via AI over the long term. IBM made a short term decision on first world labor replacement for third world labor replacement, because it saved money instantly. (eg first innings). IBM will now pursue AI automation, thus replacing 3rd world labor (eg later innings). IBM’s pursuit in NA will be to partner off lower margin businesses or consolidate them. Scale out/non-enterprise infrastructure, non-hybrid cloud, TSS, and most likely Tucson and Rochester plants are in the cross hairs.

I think you are incorrect about “many more thousands” If the 8k is correct and we add in the spring RA’s plus dumping weather, IBM is close to 40k USA headcount. I suspect they are where they want to be (8% of worldwide head count PLUS approx 10-12k in the plants, labs, and TSS)
