Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

Motivational fuel

There are tons of angry, worried, resentful posts out there. People concerned about being let go before, during or after Christmas. People angry with the way the layoffs are unfolding. Other’s upset as to the reasons “why we are at this juncture”. All I can say is use it.

Use it as motivational fuel to make your life better. As many others have alluded to, and I tend to agree, let it motivate you to learn a new skill or sharpen your existing skills. Wait, be patient, as the job market gets better, and it will, move on to another company..
Get your resume ready and move on when the time is right. Citi offers no benefits that other companies do not. Do not think that Citi is “the only place you can ever work at” but rather think of it as “the last place LIKE THIS that you’ll ever work at”.

Post ID: @3slb+1vKSMDJR Only if you foolishly tell your new potential employer to contact specific Citi employees for references who may divulge negative opinions about you unless you coach them on what to say prior to them being contacted by the potential employer.
The financial industry (includes banks, pe, hedge funds, asset mgmt etc.) generally refers employee verifications and references to the HR Dept who are directed to disclose only the facts: Dates of employment, your name, title, and in most cases Not even your salary.
HR will tell the potential employer to ask You for Your Pay stubs.

Does Citi HR have the capability/motivation to mess up a persons reference if a prospective employer calls to verify tenure ?

For many, it sadly is the only place they can work because Citi teaches you non-transferrable skills and the people who have gathered these useless skills over 10 years really cannot leave, and they are usually the ones acting hostile and making life difficult for everyone else. I recently left after 3 years and learned nothing, except how to navigate complex politics and nasty coworkers.

So if you are smart, ambitious, and skilled in your role, you know there is only one solution - and that is to leave. I also encourage anyone who is young and wants to have an impactful career to leave. I have almost 20 years of experience in financial services now and have never seen a company more poorly run than Citi. The few years I spent here set me back in my career and made me so miserable that I started therapy because of it. It is not a normal workplace.
