1pym+1vNDDQn7 if you recall back in 05 Mark came back from Europe to run NA. Remember Billy was the CEO. Then in 06 he was fired by his own family or they threatened to sell the preferred stock.
So getting back to Mark. So when Alan came in he had time to study and learn from a master. He saw what a real leader does to run a company.
You look back at Alans vision and plan a guy on the line to a WS banker understood it. There was a rumor that Mark and Billy went at it the Friday before he announced he was stepping down.
Every time Alan was on stage Billy look like a deer in headlights.
The family never like it when an Exec outshines the family... They are usually shown the door pretty quick.

Never did really, but compared to the last few years. . .
Thought I was the only one who remembered Mark Fields 1.0 with that "Change or Die" fluff.
(Mark Fields 2.0 was "now we will Go Forward the Right Way."
Never liked Fields, but at least he understood the obvious - build quality vehicles people want to buy at a competitive price.
Also liked his vision of the campus renewal better than the mess Moonbeam left behind.
