What is the Leadership Learning Program?

Got this email telling me I was selected for some special Emerging Leader Program, it’ll be held at a university in another state and purports to “bring together leaders who are facing similar challenges” and “build depth in critical skills tied to leadership expectations”.

I swear it’s a phishing email but EMIT said it’s not, and it’s full of real links to internal websites like goto/LeadershipLearning and a share point survey to respond with whether I will attend.

What is this? Some kind of special seminar? I’ve never heard of it before.

Note: I on my 4th role in the company and it’s not a management/leadership role.

The UNC course and professors are pretty solid. Some decent leadership nuggets. Some unnecessary fluff.
The teachers are not XOM employees. Generally can be very candid in discussions. It’s a good week and company is actually spending a ton on these to invest in employees

You may think initially that you've been decieved, but eventually you'll understand. I've had this experience.

You'lll be working at either Angola (Louisiana) or Parchmen (Mississippi) prison as a guard.
Pretty simple work really, but great training for EM leaders.
It's a Master's degree equivalent.

I remember being sent to seminars only to return to find zero management support for the new concepts when I tried to use them. Was told that higher management is settled into the current process so it's not the right time to introduce new ideas.

The EM HiPo grooming system does not build or promote real leaders.
HiPo candidates are moved around different jobs that they do not understand and cannot lead, then constantly given false top rankings. There is no part of the HiPo system to distinguish id--ts from natural leaders. Selection and upward movement in the HiPo system is based on networking, sponsorship, and avoiding any bad event becoming traceable to a HiPo.
A true leadership development system would place HiPos into horrific unwinnable challenges and the ones who shine get moved upwards. At EM, if a HiPo somehow gets into a challenge, the HiPo is moved quickly such the the challenge cannot be blamed on the HiPo.

The latest EM response to the HiPo system producing babied mo--ns is to recruit outside hires straight into executive positions. Zero effort to fix the HiPo failing ladder.

It’s an attempt to keep good employees and transition them to leadership roles. I felt the class was nothing more than a boring koolaide class and hated every minute.

Ours went to NC. Amazing that is not something offered or fostered in house. The problem is these guys only got there due to politics. Even if the NC course is legit how would these paper tigers know what to do with it?

I was nominated for the UNC Leadership Program. It’s a good program. It’s a shame that most of supervisors I had don’t practice the concepts.

This course is now nominated by people who are not your supervisor. A few years ago emphasis was put on getting minority and female involvement numbers up. Lots of people have been supervisors for many years and are being overlooked to include diversity folks.

North Carolina used to be pretty exclusive but now Michigan is the exclusive leadership course.
