Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

5 Days Per Week

Sanders says the executive team has been 5 days for some time and now it’s time all of you suffer from the unnecessary need to commute. She did say they would resolve the logistical issues first. You know, things like parking, office space, cleaning and food services.

This makes the TW acquisition and integration look brilliant….

I remember a time about 10 years ago when space was tight and everyone was in the office they had 2 employees per 6x6 cube and if you were a contractor it was 3 per 6x6 cube. so unproductive

"would rather us work in grey cubicles"

Think again . . . to get all the employees some kind of desk space they are going to give us all 3x5 desks with little or no dividers between work spaces. That is the only way to fit all of us into the buildings they have. ATT still intends to unload the midtown buildings in ATL and try and move everyone to Lenox and Alpharetta. The days of the cube are long gone. ATT has taken the airline approach . . . cram as many people into a space that OSHA will allow. You will have to figure out how to park on your own.

"Big Tech workers got too used to perks."

I worked fully remote for a full10 years prior to COVID. And yes, there are definite perks to the employees. But there are significant perks for the company. I work a lot more when I'm working from home. I'm in the Pacific Time Zone. I'm not making it to calls with people in Israel or India if I'm commuting to the office, but I can working from home. And with a 1.5 hours commute that gets longer the later I come in, I'm not taking those calls from home and then heading for the office. If the company wants me in the office 5 days/8 hours, then that's all they are going to get, versus the 50+ working from home. The company also gets lower lease costs, lower utility costs, etc.

Limiting my hours because of the commute has nothing to do with work effort or work ethic. I've gotten "Exceeds Expectations" both work full-time in the office, and full-time WFH. The hours simply comes down to the number of hours in the day. The commute just takes up too much time to give more to the company. That's how it worked before WFH, and it'll be what I go back to when we are full-time RTO.

The problem is, for a geo-diverse telecommunications company with teams spread across the country (RTO is not changing that, no matter what they say) and, as Legg said, around the world, WFH just make sense.

But when you don't know how to manage people, the "high-tech" management has to fall back to 1900's management style.

The fact that the warning shot is being fired before the "logistics" are worked out is telling. They want you to quit as soon as possible.

My colleagues and I heard today that L2s will have to be 5 days a week starting as early as next January.

Besides the clear lack of space for everyone, the concern many have is that many offices need far better amenities / modernized facilities (free snacks / food / soft drink options). This would at least kinda persuade people to come to office. But management is too cheap and clearly would rather us work in grey cubicles and use one of 5 coffee machines in the building.

"solve the logistical issues first."

The only logistical issues the executives care about is that their parking space and office are available.

When it comes to employees, if an executive opens their mouth, its nothing but lies.
