I'm still trying to figure out what just happened. To say this was unexpected would be an understatement. Am I a complete fool? Was there a writing on the wall that I missed? I feel like there was absolutely no reason for these layoffs but I could be missing something major. Am I?

Unfortunately, it's just business. Businesses operate to make profit and money for the shareholders. The execs are hired to drive profitability.
2005-2014 AMD had extremely poor upper management. Lisa has done a great job turning the company around.
btw This isn't the first layoff this year. There was a smaller layoff in the summer.
You're not missing anything. It's the execs chasing short term profits above all else, full stop. Your job is never secure in a company like this and it can and will be cut at any time if the execs think they can line their pockets a bit more by getting rid of you.
I’m so sorry you were impacted. AMD is a house of cards. Bad management and poorly run. It’s a matter of time before it all unravels. Executives are too far removed. The culture that made it a great place to work is dead.
