Thread regarding Bank of America layoffs

At what level do referals even work?

I have been referring some old coworkers, and none of them are even getting interviews, and they are smart guys. I want that referral bonus at some point. Are AVP and the below referrals worthless?

BOA doing them a favor by not giving them interview. Please DO NOT bring them to this toxic environment.

P.S. forgot to mention -- there is a definite bias in favor of INTERNAL candidates.

Say the magic words "Retention Candidate" and you da' bo-b!

Recruiters and managers just love that.

They've hired every single person I ever referred. It's not just enough to "refer".

Necessary, but not sufficient.

I do 2 things:

  1. Find out who the Recruiter (not HR, the actual Recruiter - different team) and call them personally and make a case. It's a hard "sell" if candidate is external, and boy, do I lay it on. Like a lawyer advocating for your client. Push HARD.
  1. And then, look up who manages that team. Who does that person report to? Keep going up the hierarchy, find the most senior person you know and send them a personalized email with the resume attached. Make the case the for the hire in the email. And if you don't know that most senior person, network and navigate until you find someone in your network who does.

I am a through-and-through Meritocrat, who truly (naively?) believes the most qualified person should get the job.

But this place absolutely ain't no Meritocracy!

It's WHO you know. Get the right words into the right ear enveloped is a sh!t ton of flattery for that hiring manager. (vomit, I know. But you do what you gotta do)

I have a 100% success rate. This works. You have to really, really press hard.

You got this!!

Every person I have referred was never contacted. The bank missed out on some really incredible people. It’s ridiculous so I don’t bother anymore. My old manager had the same issue and couldn’t figure out what was going on in HR.

They don’t, and don’t waste your time with them. I did this one time ten years ago, and ultimately ended up apologizing to my friend for how they treated him. I have been asked several times if I know anyone who would be a good fit to fill an open roll. I do know many who would bring great success to our platform and office, but I simply say “sorry, I don’t know of anyone”, even though they know that I do. At this point, I wouldn’t refer this place towards the nearest exit during a fire.
