Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

PMP process is irrevocably broken

My today sheepishly informed me he had to rescind an EE because the powers above him wanted to see fewer awarded. Apparently in part because since company performance is low, it’s assumed we can’t be actually be doing EE level work. By all accounts I was very successful this year - how is this motivating? I cannot achieve more than I have, particularly given my circumstances. This whole system is designed to suppress upward achievement. Why would I bust my a-s to get VC, when I can coast and get the same score?

We are generally the scapegoats for the folly of senior managers. We have promoted "d-mb as rocks and lazy as he-l" individuals to the upper ranks.

If you want evidence that the PMP process is broken, one of my cascade goals from my super was “grow discipline mindshare by > 20%”. That was it.

If anyone can explain what that means and how to measure it to show I met it that would be great.

Previous system was dependent on a strong arm goonie manager to bat for you in the ranking session. The loudest talking head and the downright unsubstantiated got their way regardless of merit in 1 hr song and dance. At the end those session you were left bewildered how a certain individuals ended up getting a 1st rank while another got a 2-. Most managers now, certainly the senior ones, are product of that system and now you know the reason for mess we are in now newbie?

You folks worry too much about this BS.
The key factor for layoffs (which strangely enough nobody mentioned) is your position within your pay range.
I am located at the bottom of my range, 78 percentile. This would make my layoff much less cost effective than the layoff of my colleague/peer located at the 30 percentile.

They are doing these layoff to cut costs and improve free cash flow, not to punish you if you have 2 “expect more” over the last 3 years.

Yes, this is happening. If you get one EE, it's not bad, especially if you are on a strong team. The problem is that teams are not recognized or ranked, so if you are on a team with lots of competent people, it's tougher for the supervisor to dole out the EEs on a curve.

The performance system is profoundly silly and performative, but that's because we don't have direct ways to measure many jobs and roles. It's not because those jobs and roles are not important; it's the nature of a complex integrated company. What we need to do is clearly define the goals of different teams. General Managers should do this in quite a bit of detail. Brilliant and successful management is very interested in the details without constantly micromanaging. We mostly don't have those managers at Chevron. Everyone is interested in slide decks and politicking, not trying to flatten out communications and deliver results that genuinely improve our performance. The way we work today—the status quo—is what we will keep getting. The Engine is a flailing attempt to do something differently, but India is really the global home of bureaucracy, more bureaucratic than even the Australians; it might be the old Blighty influence. It's not going to move the needle; it might be funny (as long as we can keep our jobs!).

I feel sorry for you. Wow rescind is worse not giving it in the first place. It’s like being uninvited to a party. Your manager should have coordinated better not to give you false hope

I struggle with similar. And what’s my answer? Because it’s who I am. I can’t not care or do my best because it would be an affront to myself. I wish I could. Life would be less stressful. However, I am who I am.

Good luck.
