I, a C14 and team lead, received a new Director and Managing Director last March as part of phase 4 of the Reorganization of Citigroup as my two direct managers were laid off. Last week, on Monday December 23rd, I approached my current Director to inquire about a early dismissal for my team for Christmas Eve, which had in past years been permitted by the prior management structure. I was denied that request, told that everyone had to work a full day on Christmas Eve, which I still in shock over. Later that day members of my team inquired in a team meeting making sure that everyone could leave early on Christmas Eve in order to get home to their families for the Holiday. I did not hold back and told them the truth, that the new management required them to be there all day on Christmas Eve. I still cannot believe that Citigroup would not allow a non client facing team, actually multiple on the same floor, to leave early to celebrate a major religious Holiday. First thing Tuesday morning I told the team that they could leave early that day, as it was the proper and right thing to do. I did not check with my Director over that, which would had been difficult as she had taken the day off for herself, and was on a flight to the Caribbean to begin a week vacation. I still cannot believe that Citigroup has become so cold, clueless and scheming, but I experienced it first hand.

People don’t want to WORK at WORK.
Then WHY work at all?
Quit.
It’s just a holiday, get over it.
As long as you weren’t denied your paid vacation, it shouldn’t matter.
Post ID: @101+1wcS516J The OP said he's a SVP, which may Not be Senior level enough at Citi, although it should be.
Remember, SVPs, VPs, AVPs and Associates in Citi are the equivalent of Real Banks' (JPMC, GS, Morgan, Barclays, BofA, etc.) Associates and Analysts. LMFAO !
This is with reference to the type, quality and quantity of work, projects, and assignments they get as well as Salaries and Bonuses, and how they're treated in Citi compared to the Real Banks.
So, For anyone out there Krazy, Insane or Foolish enough to Bizarrely want to get a job in Citi, if you're a VP in GS, JPMC etc. make sure you apply for Director or even MD jobs in Citi.
As many Posters have already posted about, you'll learn Nothing in Citi that you can use and leverage for your next Level Up the Food Chain or sell to the Real Banks for your next jobs. Take a Citi job Only if you're Long Term Unemployed or So desperate.
Hence, Citi is NOT an Employer of Choice, but an Employer of Desperation or Last Resort, just like Fast Food companies, McDonalds or Temp-Contractor jobs. LMFAO !
Religious holiday? Ok, maybe in 1800s... but still a reach.
Do you not enough autonomy in your senior role to just make the call?
Rules for thee, not for me. The name of the game at Citi.
I, too, was a C14 at Citi and left after the restructuring. I'm only on here because they still haven't paid my vacation days. All to say that I've worked in banks for nearly 20 years and no one does sh-t in December. If they say they're doing sh-t, they're most likely pretending. So take NYE off and give your Director the middle finger.

Oof…
OP did not out himself. He outed his manager. Mission accomplished !
Post ID: @1hse+1wcS516J The OP did Not himself/herself. There are plenty if female MDs in the U.S. as well as those who took vacation the last 2 weeks of December.
Banks have a thug-like atmosphere - the tougher you are the smaller the chance your MD will be treating you like a mo--n - mine MDs know I do not give a sh-t about the job and about what they want and think - so no problems here :D
OP given the level of detail included in your post including your directors gender and place of holiday vacation you just outed yourself
Thank God I got laid off. I now see my MD did me a favor by choosing me to go. I now work for another bank with a higher salary, higher bonus and better work life balance
Certification by Wall Street means controlled. If you can find a private company to work for there are more options that the leaders have.

An employment lawyer would be best to advise you. Get a lawyer on contingency who will not get any money unless they win. Suggestion, sue for 1 million. Agree to settle out of court for severance (or more)+undue unnecessary stress+ legal fees, make sure to include the legal fees. Naturally as a result of the unnecessary stress, you can’t sleep, you get headaches, ulcers etc..who knows what all you are suffering with as a result of stress. All of which should be mentioned at the table and\or courts should it go that far.
Also, contact Senator Warren. She’s been eyeing Citi quite closely in regards to how they run their business, not just in trading but also internal operations. If this is an example as to the ethical behavior and internal operations and desparation as to “how” they are trying to recoup money to “look good”, who knows what else they are doing. If they aren’t doing anything wrong, then they should not have an issue with opening up the books.

I suggest you seek out a lawyer.

That’s trivial. Imagine being a good employee, blatantly & clumsily set up by Director to be laid off, you are unfairly terminated, given an NDA to sign in order to receive severance and keep your mouth shut, but even after letting you go, Citi still withholds your severance….
True story…
Trust me, they know exactly what they are doing. It’s all a game to them. It’s by design to run you and\or your people off. They are heavily counting on attrition.
I am fortunate as my MD and skip level are pretty awesome. Here’s the shame of it, I dare not mention their names so that they do not get punished for being nice, honorable, kind and reasonable. Right now those traits is NOT what the upper echelon wants their MD’s to exhibit.
To the OP: Next time, for the next holidays do Not even ask your new MDs and Directors for permission to allow your team to leave work early.
Just let them do it and order them to leave work early.
By even asking the A$SHoles MotherFvckers you're giving them the option of a binary response: Yes or No. And being the A$SHoles MotherFvckers they are, they're going to say "No" !
Post ID: @kpp+1wcS516J So very true in Risk "Management". They believe they're an apotheosis and became defied just because they're MD and Directors once they get those sinecure titles.
They did Not forget how many bodies they trampled on to get to MD and Director levels. They just do Not give Flying FVCK ! They know exactly what they've done and are doing!
Meanwhile, most of them are Incompetent, Feckless and Clueless, and do Not how to do the actual work that the Minions, Lower level employees do !
10+ OT FTE : It was the worst change freeze ever, and I have never seen so many things being pushed by EOY. Maybe some are scared; some try to chase...
I am glad there are some who are human. Simillar thing were played in my team...
Heck, if you are salaried, leave whenever. Finish the day at home. You are all adults…
OP you did the right and just thing.
The rule of the land for most Ds and MDs at Citi is : Do as I say , not as I do.
As if they somehow become godly once they get those titles, forgetting how many bodies they trampled on to get there.
