Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

Help and advice for those being laid off

It's a shock to the system. But the best advice I got when I was laid off 5 years ago was to let everyone in my network know as soon as possible. It took me 6 months and I tried hard not to turn negative. Here is some steps to take:

  1. Take care of your finances. Understand your situation, find out how long you can weather the storm.

  2. Take a long weekend break. Refresh.

  3. Join a couple of Career Network Groups - There are quite a few around the Twin Cities. Most are church sponsored, but are very very helpful for networking. Easter Lutheran in Eagan, Wooddale in Eden Prairie, Grace Church in Eden Prairie.

  4. Let everyone know you are looking

  5. List your strengths. Do a Strengths Finder

  6. Don't Wait!

Network, network, network. Identify companies that you'd want to work for and speak to as many people as you can in those companies. Ask for informational interviews with leaders in the organization. Ask what type of training, education, continuing ed classes, certifications, etc. would be beneficial for you to have. Keep an open mind with your career options - are some of your skills transferable? Maybe volunteer somewhere to get new/additional experience.

IAWTP. Stop it with the forced religion! It's bad enough they send solicitors banging on our doors to load up the offering plate.

Dear Anonymous77129: I am not the OP, but there is no forced religion in these workgroups. These workgrounps are in churches because 1) the have large meeting rooms 2) places of worship are typically open all the time. 3) you typically find people who are more compasionate than you, for example.

Not pushing religion, nor do they push religion (though Wooddale does integrate it in their program). The goals and objectives are to find a job.

I was laid off from Target about a year ago. It sucks. But... I'm in a MUCH better place now. It does give one pause though to re-think life. If you have been thinking of a career change, its a great opportunity for that. Hugs to anyone affected.

Forced religion?? People need to stop getting offended even with people sharing. We are all free to take the advice or not. I appreciate wiseopinions from many sources.
