They knew!! They don't care about their employees, just pleasing their shareholders.

Probably not. They probably thought the oil prices would go up. So typically you have to see were your finances are at the end of each quarter.
I think this was a reaction to continued pricing pressures - they hoped that things will turn around, now we know the slump will last 5 years
