Thread regarding Zenith Education Group layoffs

I don't understand why anybody is still there. Seriously, I just can't grasp that this company still has employees!

Could someone give me some insight into why you are still at Zenith (AKA Everest the Sequel)? I was let go around a year ago, just before the $hit hit the fan. In my five years there I saw a lot of RIFs, firings (usually the best people), and resignations. The entire experience there was one of constant upheaval, confusion, incompetent management, and sweatshop like pressure. I've been following what's been happening the last year, first through colleagues who stayed, and now through these message boards since everyone I was friendly with is gone for one reason or another. I was as hopeful as you were that the new owners would improve how the company was run, and I understand that people wanted to give them a chance to do that. But I cannot fathom how someone who saw them take over four months ago with no change in management and "business as usual" messages would have stayed. How was that not enough to be your final clue? I'm not trying to be mean. I know most of you are great people and hard workers, and you've been through enough with all this $hit. I just don't understand why anyone would tolerate that level of abuse for so long, even if getting out meant taking a lesser paying job. Please help me out here, why in the heck did you stay?!?

It was just something I noticed at our campus, not saying that was the intent. One thing I'm sure of they went after a dollar number per campus. At the campus I was at all the instructors are full time employees. I still feel there will be more RIFs coming and timing depends on when classes start. Everest and Wyotech have different start dates so it may not be done on the same date.

Age had nothing to do with the RIFs. I am 37 and I was let go and so were a bunch of others who were older and younger than I am. There are still people there who are over 50 and didn't get RIFed (yet). It was simply the luck of the draw, if you will, in some cases.

If you're an instructor, it's highly unlikely they will let you go prior to July 9th or 10th, unless they want adjuncts to finalize your grades. Management will keep you in the dark until the very last second about enrollments for Summer term.

One thing I'm running into is age discrimination. When you're pushing 60 no one wants to hire you because they know it's a short term deal. I believe age also had a lot to do with the last RIF. Most of us that were left go at my campus are over 50. I'm very curious as to the average age of the people that were RIFed at the end of April.

OP - it's called inertia. We're lazy-ass people from a lazy-ass society that's always mollified us with calming statements like "it will all work out in the end", "keep your head up", and "there's light at the end of the tunnel". Never underestimate what an American will put up with if the alternative is to get off their ass and show momentum. Damn! Now I need a drink...

So, let's just say I've been looking to leave. I started late, but know the writing is on the wall and I may very well be included in the next round of layoffs (trust me, there's evidence to support that). I keep seeing on this board that there's another round of RIFs scheduled for June. Anyone have any idea what that means? EOM? It seems like they do that because insurance goes to the end of the month you get let go in, right? So I have, like, three weeks to get a job while I'm still employed?? I'm trying not to panic, but everyone knows it's harder when you're out of work. At this point I'm thinking I'll take anything I'm offered.

Face it, the folks that are left don't have competitive employment skills. They stayed because they had no damn choice. ECMC couldn't have made their intentions more clear if they'd bought the rights to The Simpson's Mr Burns to use as their new logo. I can't imagine Hawn in a meeting with maniacal evil laughter involved. CCi and ECMC drove out all of the responsible, experienced, knowledgeable employees and deserve what they are left with.

I left Zenith as soon as I realized that they weren't firing Kim Dean and her cronies. Most of my friends think I was a complete and total idiot for staying on that long. They are probably right.

Many people stayed on foolishly because the jobs that they applied for offered them less salary. I wasn't so short-sighted and took a public community college position. It does pay significantly less, but the benefits more than make up for it. I'm talking a union job with enforced 37.5 hour week, 14 holidays a year, 20 vacation days, 20 sick days, a laid back environment, and a campus with inexpensive meal options, sports events, lectures, etc. And best of all - job security and great retirement bennies. When I look back at my years at Everest, it's hard to believe that I didn't crack under the pressure and blatant dishonesty and constant abuse. Nobody deserves that, except the CCi/Zenith managers who are the ones dishing it out.
