How rampant is Pell Running? Apollo Group says it's nearly eliminated

@WalterSobchak, you claim that nearly all the students you did so-called "financial advising" for were "Pell Runners." Yet Apollo Group says Pell running has nearly been eliminated (after acknowledging problems in the past). How do you explain this vast difference in opinion? When you mean "Pell Running" are you actually including those who recieved student loans but not Pell Grants? And if you suspected actual Pell running, did you notify your superiors? In your opinion, what percentage of Pell Runners would you suspect were African American? What percentage were poor, in your estimation? Do you think that UoPX received a reputation as a place to get money? How long were you "aware" or "suspecting" the alleged fraud or misuse of funds? Did you talk to your peers about this? If so, what did they say?

Presumably you are talking about stipend chasers. Stipends as many of you should know come from over awarding unsubsided loans. Pell by its self is never going to be enough money to cover tuition at a for profit school.

I should know because there was nothing like loading up a student with unsubsidized loans so they could call back in three days and ask why they haven't received their check.

You don't have to worry U of P until you hear the initials ECMC. When you do, pack your bags because you are history.

All lies. It wouldn't benefit UOP to have a student just stay for 1 class and bail. All or almost all funds would have to be returned to the lender leaving UOP with unpaid tuition. This then turned into collecting tuition dues and in many cases collecting on a student who can't afford a couple hundred dollars. So for people to say that UOP only cares about money and for students to stay for a class to collect on title IV is a lie.

It was protocol when I was there. Students were enrolled into a "degree program" which gave them full-time student status and qualified them for the max amount of title IV, but they only take one class at a time. UoPX would receive the funds for a full semester.

Can someone else confirm Former FA's statement about UoPX getting paid for a full load when students were only taking one class? @Former FA, are you sure this is this still happening?

At UoP students only take one class at a time and are still considered a full-time student. But UoP collected title IV for a full twelve-credit semester (4-5 classes). Students would finish the first class but drop asap so more title IV money would be refunded to them.

I had a student call me every day for weeks, crying a few times, asking about excess funds. She didn't get her disbursement in time. Rent a center came and took her furniture, and she dropped out.

As a former FA, I saw too many Pell Runners. Many used this money as a supplement to their welfare--it happened all the time. That's why UOP needed to have real entrance requirements, but they didn't care so long as a student completed their first five week course and made it through the second week of the second course. UOPcalcukated that churning and burning up as profitable. They did this until 2010 when the Feds started asking questions. The executives and their stoolie managers and directors are sick individuals. Please share your story with DOE and the FTC.

Did anybody ever try to get a pell? You can't make any money at all or you are disqualified. If you're white and employed you aren't getting a damn cent. You can always waste a month applying for $400 scholarship though, that is what a lot of boomers think is going to pay for school.

I teach at the university, and I have very few (if any) students who I think are just trying to get checks. I taught at another for profit and saw this all the time.
