Background Checks

As a sophomore petroleum engineering student wondering about future job opportunities, how are strict are criminal background checks for field engineers at Schlumberger? I have an arrest record and a dismissed class A misdemeanor, no conviction, for a fight. Wondering if it's worth the $2k for me to get it expunged.

Also anyone know the policy at baker, halliburton, weatherford, exxon, cheveron, etc?

Don't sweat it. If things are up and they need you, you will get hired..

when you expunge your record it just expunges what you were arrested for not the arrest. So when someone does a background check it will just say you were arrested.

Yah man come on. Professional! Know better than that. Wait till a few years in after you proved your self before you start doing things like all the blow off all the pianos in all the fancy bathrooms in the world on your days off.

Don't expect to work in wireline with 2 more levels of FBI background checks for increased security you'll most likely get tagged as non trustworthy.

I know wireline has a strict no felon policy. Not sure about misdemeanors.

I'm an FSM (field service manager) if HR tags a guy and says he can't get hired for whatever the reason I move on. You might be amazing but if the background check comes back negative I move on. It's nothing against you man but I have other things to worry about and the first 3 months you're learning. Why would I take the risk and hire you?

Or do yourself a favor and don't go to work for Schlumberger.

If you weren't convicted it won't be an issue most times because you weren't guilty. If you weren't convicted you should have no "criminal record" just an "arrest record" which are 2 different things, just make sure you don't lie on an application and if it asks if you have ever been arrest say yes. Even if you pay to get it "expunged", it will still show up on certain records, it all depends on how they do their background screening.

Probably better to get it expunged. I'm not in HR so I have no idea, but for what it's worth I remember only being asked if I was ever convicted of a felony during my application.

If you expunge your criminal record, you won't be qualified for a senior management position.

Yes you should get it expunged. You will get directly compared to other potential recruits. If they are the same as you on paper, but you have an arrest record, you will not be chosen for the position. Pay the money and use it as a lesson to avoid situations like that which may affect your career. An engineer is a professional, and an arrest record is unacceptable.
