Forced Early Retirements

If the company asks you to retire early are you treated differently than a layoff ? Looking back on the May reductions seems the people who got escorted to the parking lot were all younger. The early retirement age guys who left generally had an effective date a month or more into the future. Just wondering if you are forced to early retire if you have some say on when your effective date will be.

Often, there were people laid off who met the criteria for early retirement. People were escorted out (except in RPA), and severance was still in play as was unemployment payments.

Offering to retire early eliminates the options associated with the layoff such as the severance. No value in retiring until after the layoffs end and you have concluded you will not be involved in the layoff process. Offering to be involved in the layoffs is a different story.

We saw the same thing. There is no official voluntary layoff, but "if you are interested, have a discussion with your boss." They probably feel if you are happy to be exiting, there is less risk keeping you around for a bit to finish whatever you are working.
