Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

You can apply for unemployment

For those of that need it, you can apply for unemployment. Shell discourages because it makes them look bad. However, it is why they pay unemployment insurance. Also the cuts are not just because it is a tough market. Especially for those in Projects and Technology. They are already posting many of the roles that were reduced in Americas in Bangalore, India. "the climate is tough" but they still need the cheap labor. Make sure for those filling unemployment to include that in the forms. "My job was sent to low cost country overseas."

So you think all those Jobs outsourced to India are work at home positions? If you don't mind can you tell me who i can contact to get those $20,000 per year jobs..? Because I'll be making up to 16,000 a year if i go on unemployment and would be glad to have that 20K job where I can work without collecting unemployment. But then if all those people in India work from home what boggles my mind is why would Shell Built such a super sized campus in Chennai..? We all know lot of the Finance work for UAX used to be done from Chennai. Not to mention almost all of IT work.

As an FYI, your unemployment won't start until you severance period is reached. For example 21 weeks of pay means you won't get the first check for 21 weeks after termination. Unemployment just called me because Shell told them I took a severance.

To Anonymous163348... You are wrong. I know 4 employees in P&T that are full time remote workers who were not laid off. 2 are close to retirement. ... and another one is very good friends with the supervisor, since the go back ....

Legally, Shell can not discourage you from applying to receive unemployment benefits.

Every business in existence exist for the sole purpose of producing profit. That being said, every business should be constantly looking for ways to reduce their overhead costs and increase their profit, Shell is no different. Contrary to what is being spread on these boards, the majority of jobs being outsourced to places like India are mostly people who work from home in virtual environments. So yes it does make sense that those jobs cost the company may be $20,000 per year as opposed to $80,000 per year in America.
