If taking severance, you may want to consider stopping any automatic contribution to your 401k before you quit

Because that percentage you chose way back when, will get automatically get deducted to your 401k like it does every pay check. However, this should obviously be a more substantial chunk that you may want up front, instead of going to the 401k. I think you can go to fidelity.com and do it by making your contributions $0.

This would be thousands of dollars for me that I need more right now thanks to getting layed off.
