Marketing - Or, How I Lost My Job And Learned To Love The Bomb

Whole Foods Global and Regional have keenly demonstrated today that they know NOTHING about real marketing. Prime example: Love Fest going on while you are self-destructing. All those $500 gift cards would translate into over 100 jobs for a year. All for a stunt. And a poor one at that. Too many people who started as Grocery Team Members - without ever having read a marketing article much less attended a class - moving up the food chain to make decisions that are costing us all so dearly today.

I'm out the door, but I'll give this one for free (it's been said before by people more erudite than myself): take control of the conversation. Stop being reactionary and think about the Long Con. Own "Whole Paycheck". Do it with humor and THEY WILL REMEMBER YOU FOREVER.

Get all your Love Fest dollars back and pay Disney to have Kermit the Frog sing "It's Not Easy Being Green" to a downhearted Walter Robb. Invite the Mayor of Tallahassee to do a commercial entitled, "Whoops, My Bad!" - where he explains that Whole Paycheck was actually meant to be a compliment. Make t-shirts that say, "Such great food, I could spend my WHOLE PAYCHECK here!" or go the other way: "Whole Hearts. Whole Families. Whole Foods." Whichever. Stop letting the media beat you (and us) up and own the conversation. Show WalMart and Kroger as creepy party crashers trying to get in to an elegant party (organics) and as they finally get in the door, they see us all and we say "Welcome! We've been waiting for you!" Then they hear a cooler party in the next room and ask if they can go in there too and we say, "No, not yet - that's our 'Quality Standards' party. You can't go in there yet."

Take the stick out of your collective asses and beat back the competition with it! That is all.

The sad thing is when there ARE competent people on the marketing team, and they are never taken seriously because of a dumb f***ing titles.

A day later their taking credit for your ideas. everyone looks at you like your a toddler speaking your first words and poetry came spilling out. A keen insight an ability to merge visual aesthetics and human psychology- new ideas, saving time and money, but no, whytf would that matter.

The sgas in most stores deal with a level of stress, deadlines, and multitasking skill sets and projects not just from one team, but from everyone- Even regional and global requiring specific signage. Only to have it all change a day later because, oops! They made a mistake.

The problems are at the top.

They are regional and global.

Its like theyre perpetually stoned, paranoid and making a lot of stupid mistakes that lead to something so vapid and transparent, you have to wonder how oblivious the customers are, if they even care, or if they are just easy to manipulate because they WANT IT.

I dedicated a lot of time, passion and skill in everything ive done for wfm over the years, and in a moment, it was gone.

Its a weird experience to see your stl cry when reading the letter informing you of your untimely demise.

Yet, I try to look at it like this:

The ship is sinking.

And I was close enough to still make it to shore.

We're the lucky ones.

It also helps if you know how to swim.

I'm marketing. I wish I would've written this. I secretly wish I knew who did. Sending love and hugs to all my fellow WFM TM's....those who are falling asleep tonight wondering if, and those who care about them. I love my WFM family. I am very sad tonight. Praying.

Would YOU run away from a poo stick? I say, "Yes, sir! You WOULD." Never dismiss a poo stick, lest ye be vexed, good sir!

This is so true. For too long WFM leadership has been throwing money and energy at everything BUT the true essence of Whole Foods. ALL of WFM's success has been due to riding the coat tails of the FOOD. Yet somewhere along the way WFM leadership got deluded into taking credit for all that success. OOPS.
