Thread regarding Whole Foods Market Inc. layoffs

It's Just A Grocery Store

There are a lotta people on this site that need to chill. This is a grocery store we're talking about. You all act like someone told you Santa isn't real. You're surprised that a publicly traded company would eventually have to become more like a regular grocery store? How many buyers do you think work in stores at Kroger? How many supervisors work in stores at Publix? How many marketing people work in the stores at aldi? Very few! This is business. Some newspapers are already calling this a good move by wfm. I'm sorry if some of you out this company on some kinda pedestal but consider this a reality check.

I am already the only buyer and our store does over 1 million a week in sales. I can 'reapply' for my same position for 15 dollars an hour. Am I really asking too much to be treated a little better? Waking up at midnight is hard work and exhausting. Pay should reflect

This is true. Saldy Whole Foods is a cult. They suck you in and make you think its a real career and that its a good job. They make you think they care when they don't give two shits. I saw they were full of shit pretty early on. But it sucks for those who drank the koolaid for too long.

167982 got it exactly right. WFM is being held to the standard it set for ITSELF. The place is rife with corrupt leaders and questionable ethics. What happens behind the green curtain is a clusterfuck...often times a LITERAL clusterfuck.

These arnt random new hires we are talking about losing not only jobs. but the many BENIFITS that that wfm a cut above the rest. These are people who have been working for whole foods market for YEARS and DECADES. WHOLE FOODS pitches itself as one of the best places to work and inspires employees to move I have only been here for a year and I have witnesses how hard the people work here! They make this company big $$$ and they know their stuff. Wmf has ALOT of families that work here. Husbands, wives, kids, siblings and I have had to watch SEVERAL FRIENDS have their entire family out of the job. These people just bought houses. Cars. Had children or have them on the way and it's fed up! One of my friends were trying to have a kid with IVF and now they can't start a family because of these bullshit layoffs. They just opened a store in my city a month ago, had ppl move their WHOLE families down here to manage it or they got a promotion that's they have been working for for YEARS and now they are stuck here! They tricked ppl into applying for jobs they KNEW were not going to exist in a couple of weeks. 5-10-15 or even 20 years of work down the fing drain with no warning. People were trying to convince me to move Up and now I'm like f*** that of you can fire someone who's been here for 20 years then why would I waste my time? Some people at my store even went to school and got degrees so they could move Up. And now they are firing these people and cuting their pay AND making 3 peopl. Do the job of of 8 ppl. These are good people. These are friends and family. Wfm is suposed to be better than this....they claimed to be anyway....

I understand the devotion to charities and missions and the environment. It's important. But there are other core values. The value about the environment is equal to the one about team members and the one about profits and growth. Sometimes one core value sacrifices for the good of the others. Wfm sacrificed profits for the environment in the past. Now unfortunately some team members have to be pissed off for the good of the profit/growth core value. It's a balance. None is more important than the other. Team members without profits = a charity.

It's not JUST a grocery store, but a super-overpriced grocery store. But it's not just greenwashing either (but yeah, mostly); it's nice to shop somewhere that I don't have to read the ingredients for things like nitrites, high-fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated fats. And Anonymous167982, John M. has always been an outspoken Libertarian union-busting doosh, so not sure why you would expect him to behave with compassion toward employees. You bought the cult BS and you feel betrayed. Let that be a lesson. (I never did when I worked there.)

Now Whole Foods is nothing better than the average American company.

It is just a grocery store ... that sells itself to both its team members and its customers are being MORE than a grocery store - it's a mission - green mission, green trek, WFM kids, sustainably grown, meat step ratings, core values - this is why people feel upset. They identify with these values, that have proven to be little more than greenwashing when push comes to shove. That's great that you're realistic, but people really put their heart and soul into their job, and felt like it made a difference. At tribal bazaar, at so many different meetings - we were told that this was MORE than a job. Yeah, it made me want to gag on a stick and I am super jaded and never believed it was any more than greenwashing. But to have the hypocrisy thrown in your face, while getting fired - be realistic. That hurts.
