I know UoP has an open enrollment policy.
Question: Does the school give screening tests to ID those who are deficient in Reading, English and Math skills? If they are, are these problems addressed.

@471 - yes, there have been and still are other pre-registration assessments. Mainly in reading and writing and there are also math and English proficiency requirements needed for students with either no prior completed material in these two subjects or expired (typically 5 years or older). Proficiencies, assessments and now Acuplacer (proctor) have been in the works for years. Again, the university has been diligently working on sustainable student metrics to help address the specific demographic of students they cater to. This hasn't been an easy challenge but nonetheless it's been a well studied subject and the university is beginning to better understand the actual working class student to the non-working class AA student who they made huge mistakes with. This is why the public is only looking at the stats rather than looking at the actual milestones and realize that UOP is addressing concerns and moving in the right direction. Unfortunately, it's people like those within this site who aim to slow or shut that process down. It takes A LOT of money to research and at times it may seem as if leaders are only doing it for their best interest. However, stop looking at things from a straw and believe that UOP is aiming to provide better futures to the many and to better the economy by helping people develop skills in areas with skill gaps. If you contact ODM I'm sure they'll be happy to explain a dispute resolution process. Oh and btw-- this is just one aspect of how the university is making positive strides. The financial side with regards to affordability is another challenge but it's well underway to provide alternate options to that of title IV (financial aid).
Good discusson. Po loves good questions. Some anger words hurt good discussion. Try love to help questioner.
I have two questions for posters ER and 209 respectively: I understand that Accuplacer is a beta assessment tool for new student placement. Was there some other method of student basic skills evaluation prior to Accuplacer? My other question has to do with the ODM or Office of Dispute Management: What safeguards might be in place to ensure objectivity or
impatiality on the student's behalf by UoP?
La La says Po should bend over cuz La La has THE MEATS.
So much anger. PO loves students. PO helps. Po sad for angry ones. Po says love more.
@Sad Day--your writing skills SCREAM UOP graduate/special education DERP.
254 is definitely on his rag.
He should ask Camden for some Midol or pamprin. The cramps must be horrible
It is a sad day with a few small minds having a good time at the expess of so many.
LMFBBO at ALL the investor and corporate Kook-Aid dunces apologizing for this slag heap of a school. Hey, numbskulls, have you seen APOL's performance the last three days? This bird has been plucked, f***ed, raked, and baked. It's funny to think of all the greedy bitches who have lost big $$$$$. LOL, SUCKERS.
Yep 239 needs max wings on those things
Someone is ovulating heavily again lol
@202 & 228--You worthless shill investors are laughable--APOL is tanking AGAIN today. UOP implemented placement exams and remediation efforts too late in the game. Most of these students should have enrolled in a vocational school as they were unprepared for college and now they have dropped ( some were pushed through and graduated) and have defaulted because no one hires a person who can't write or express herself verbally in standard English. Stop apologizing for this scam, you f***wits.

Students not only get close attention to their educational needs, but are given a graduation team consisting of an Enrollment advisor, Finance, and Academic advisor. This team does not even include the Facilitator of each class and the online tutoring support given by the Center for writing excellence or Center for Mathmatic excellence. The resources are there and are easy to navigate. I've attended both online and Community college and there is no way I would have been able to raise my children, work and attend school if it wasn't for Uophx. Ive been a single parent during my years at Uophx with no real skills, but after obtaining my AA and BS from Uophx, I have a chance to earn a better living. I used all the resources they offered and know I can add value to an employer/company. Uophx is an asset to those with a non traditional lifestyle and its unfortunate that most ppl dont see it that way, again ppl playing the victim because school got to hard. If it was easy, everyone would have a degree.
@189 - ODM (Office of Dispute Management). Office is responsible for student and faculty grievances and appeals. You're welcome to contact them if you would like to better understand the university SOP. 602-557-5566
Well said! While Acuplacer may serve to weed out the incompetent students and allow them to maybe look into other cheaper avenues like community colleges to complete remedial coursework as they build basic fundamentals to succeed in a university setting. Keep in mind that while it may have an impact in the short-term, these students may be happier knowing that we have placed them in a path to be better equipped for success at UOP. I wish we had direct contact with student inquiries from the get go rather than them going through ACC. Bring on Live Chat capabilities to ER's. Whether it be for enrollment or retention support. I'm also tired of hearing all the negatives.
@166. Are you willing to say that there may have been some students that have not been given the close support necessary to help them succeed. I do not mean this as a criticism, but are there processes in place to address legitimate grievances; either an omsbudsman or ethics committee that could act as a counter balance to the profit perogatives of the corporation which independently and without impunity advocate for the student?
They have instituted the Accuplacer as a beta. It has done really well and I would imagine it will be implemented across all of the colleges. It has really filtered out students with lesser potential. I do believe the university has made a lot of correct moves but I truly fear this is being done too late to save us as employees.
Thank you, well said!
Currently they are using a system called Accuplacer to measure the aptitude of potential students. The system is used by other colleges and is a proctored assessment of reading writing and math skills. So, to answer your question; Yes, Uophx has instituted a placement exam to help struggling students with placement in the correct sequence of classes.
On a side note: I am so tired of hearing about how Uophx is a scam and a greedy company. Give some examples of a company that isnt for profit. They all are. Most of the ppl who work there are good ppl and are just rryimg to feed their families. Everyone I have spoken with or know don't pray on those so-called incompetent students who sign up for classes. As a rule, we cannot tell someone they cannot go to school, but if they fill out the fafsa, complete the applications and start classes, then atleast they tried to change their lives. Everyone wants to play the victim and blame someone else for their challenges in life. Get over it and move on.
