Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Why the layoffs is going to hit more junior/less tenure people

You folks don't understand why this layoff is going to hit more junior/inexperienced/less tenure people....Less liability. You see, if you have an employee that's only 3-4 years or less out of school, they are relatively young/inexperienced, and when you lay them off, as an employer you're going to throw them a pretty nice GTFO package. And most of the time, these more young/inexperienced people are going to take the package because the figure they can relocate and find something else. Plus, since they don't have seniority, an argument can be made that there are plenty of more experience employees that need to be kept to run the ship. So it is very unlikely these younger people will not take the package and try to file a discrimination suit..On the other hand, you take an older person that's more experienced that's been working for 10+ years, with established credentials. Those people are a lot more likely to file age discrimination suits, and it would take an incredible bad PIP to disapprove their termination had very little to do with age. So unless their is a PIP/poor review to accompany some of these older folks, that's just a landmine waiting to happen. And let's be real...The company isn't going to layoff many women, african american, latinos, not matter how qualified or unqualified they are....That's just a landmine waiting to happen. So...Where do you think the bulk of the cuts are going come out of? Yup, young white male workers....

No worries. Most young white male Qcom engineers have surgeon wives. Their pockets are deep.

You're very naive and you don't know what you are talking about. It's not how it works. I've canned boatloads of people in the past. The demographics of the layoffs are carefully crafted so that discrimination lawsuits are next to impossible. Look at it this way, if you dump 100% juniors or if you dump 50% juniors/50% seniors, which one saves the company more money? And with the 50/50 dump, there is no way anyone can claim discrimination. You also need to get rid of the appropriate number of women, minorities, etc. Otherwise you open yourself up for lawsuits from non-minorities. This is all standard procedure, tried and true in the corporate world. Pretty darn bulletproof.

But if you don't want to believe that. That's fine. We'll find out the middle of this week. And it's usually how it goes at any major layoff at a US company.
