Watson gets fired if he cuts the dividend - period. His actions are purely motivated by selfishness.

US and Brent oil in the $30s today. 1985 is beginning.

If we eliminated the dividend completely, I can see your argument of Chevron becoming one of those once-great coal stocks. I don't think the previous poster is suggesting that. A reduction of 5-7 cents may be necessary if we approach another 1985 scenario. It's the pride of our CEO and his legacy that's holding that damn dividend at $1.07 while Rome burns and many employees get laid off.

Dividend is the absolute priority. All the funds, institutions and retirees will exit if dividend is compromised. Chevron will become another one of those once-great coal stocks.

Who on earth believes in a dividend anymore? Wake up and smell the cat litter, folks. It's over. Everything is over. Get out while you can!

If 1985 reaches Chevron's doorstep, I strongly believe a dividend cut will occur. I know my comment will meet with some contrarian views, but this is my well-founded opinion, not a guess. Sadly to say, Chevron over-shot it's dividend increase when it went to $1.07.

If 2016 becomes a repeat of 1985, prepare for harder times. The layoffs of 2015 will be nothing compared to what will come.
