Thread regarding Devon Energy Corp. layoffs

Devon employee -

Devon employees - I am sorry for those of you that will be parting ways with Devon today. I know there will be several in Canada and also a few in Oklahoma City. I wish you well. You will see your way through this and be better and stronger on the other side. I saw an email on my Bosses screen by accident today and I too will be among you. I have been crying most of the evening and know I have to face the inevitable tomorrow. I didn't think Oklahoma City was going to get hit again, but the rumors on here turn out to be true more than you think. IT is getting hit again along with ESS. CrAZy StUFf

:-( The sad thing is I just moved here, the good news I have never really liked it and can know go back home to Austin.

Later Lady Dep

A number of friends of mine were laid off from the Calgary office yesterday. One said she was "visited" by an upper management person - not HR (internal or external) and not her direct manager (or his direct manager).

There are no women left in her group. The layoffs in August also seemed to be disproportionately female. If this is a true trend, and I suspect it may be, it just goes to show how much it's still a boys' club when it comes right down to it. And it's the "right" boys too - buddies that hang out together - not necessarily the ones that can best do the jobs.

From all accounts, it was a horrible day yesterday. My heart goes out to everyone affected, both here and across the border. These are trying times; hang in there!

Calgary staff were told in e-mails sent out Wednesday at 7 a.m. to be in their offices with the doors closed by 8 a.m.

“Each employee either got a visit from a third party HR firm to handle the termination or from their manager if they were being retained,” the spouse said in an e-mail, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“Terminated employees were given until noon to pack their offices.”

Income and cash flow are down, down, down. No choice but to cut operating expenses, which translates into employees. The Boom is over, and there will be many people re-thinking their careers in geoscience.
