I do not make that much... But at least I am making something! I would rather there not be layoffs. Hopefully they wait until after Holidays if they have to do any layoffs. Will every one please stop asking for people to do the layoffs already and enjoy your income while you still have it. Things are not goo out there. There is no single position with any of the private firms in Houston, TX that is safe. Nobody can guarantee anything so stay where ever you are now. Don't make a move ass you will be the first one to go.

The $200,000 a year in the Houston area is about right. That's where the international employees work out of after all. But here's the thing, it's unlikely that you will make that much money outside of that arena of work. So you have to cut your expenses, make do, be resourceful and shift gears. That's what my family is having to do. Pull together and make it through this downturn. We thankfully saved a nice nest egg when times were good. It can carry us over a good ways. The average salary is 70k , the 200k is what companies pay for salary and benifits... please read what is there before commenting...

Replying to greatful.....if one is gonna get layed off ...let them know now not at last minute so one can go look for another job and restructure themselves and family ...I for one Do NOT like the not knowing!!!

I left my corporate job in 2008 at the height of the real estate implosion and started my own small business, with just a free web page and some business cards.

Never looked back. Our sales have been increasing 20 to 30% per years and we're doing fine doing something my wife and I love. What I do now has nothing to do with what I was doing for the last 20 years.

We love it. I am my own boss.

The point is, there are tons of things to do in Houston, job wise. If you can't make it here, then you ain't trying.

There are lots of opportunities out there. Don't be afraid.

Simplify your life now.
