Thread regarding Carrington College layoffs

Management will drive this place into the ground.

The management at the online portion of the university is a joke, they are more worried about how much outreach faculty is doing than on the quality of their classes. If I gave everyone A's and B's they would never question it. A student doesn't show up and turn in the least amount of work? Email them! Oh you did that and they STILL didn't show up? Contact their main campus! Oh they STILL didn't show up? Well we want to milk them for student loan money so now you have to CALL THEM! Forget actually teaching, just get butts in the seats!

I would think after watching Everest University crash and burn with this business model they would have learned that this doesn't work, maybe all of Everests old management works here. They will be on the government chopping block soon I think.

@FDYN4BO-1Ykdi, that seems like a big risk, for a working-class person to go to a more expensive college. I also see that the graduation rate for African Americans at the San Jose campus is 50%. Does Carrington have RN programs as well as LPN programs?.............................................. http://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/?q=carrington+college&s=all&id=437936

@1Xzbz, I can partially answer your questions, assuming that Carrington operases in a similar fashion to sister school DeVry. DeVry prides itself on catering to students for whom college would not otherwise be a likely option. We generally take that to mean we accept students who couldn't get into better, more affordable schools. Preying upon their desperation is apparently a viable though dispicable business plan.

I can tell you why our students come to Carrington instead of community college, at least in California. It's because the community colleges are so impacted that they can't get their classes in any sort of timely manner. Also, admittance to programs like nursing and dental hygiene at community colleges is done by lottery--all students meeting the minimum requirements go into a lottery. The student has zero control of if they will ever get into the program. Carrington has merit-based admission, so that students who do well in their prereqs can get in and get it done. They're out in a reasonable amount of time earning money, when they otherwise would be still waiting to enter a community college program. That makes sense for high-earning degrees like dental hygiene and registered nursing. Stuff like vet-tech is a head-scratcher, though. They pay wayyy too much money and spend 22 months of their time to come out earning $12 an hour, all because they love animals. I don't get that at all.

@FDYN4BO-1hglm, that's a good question. Why are people going to a for-profit nursing school, instead of a community college, when the tuition is so much higher? Are these people unable to get into these public schools? Or is their a pitch that wins over people to the for-profit side?

I think the issue is more with the students than with the colleges. it costs a lot to go to a for profit and most of the students are low income. Why don't they just take the same classes at a community college for less money? do they think there are better jobs out there with a private degree?

Devry students are forming groups to fight these issues. One group on facebook is called "Deceived By Devry" As you probably know, Carrington College is owned by Devry. You can also get information on Devry's layoff page.

This company should be investigated for illegal activities regarding student loans, bad management and mismanagement of funds.
