Unfortunately the unemployment numbers are not calculated they way they used to be. Many part-timers who need full time, certain government assistance recipients, etc., are carved out of the calculation. The calculation that is more realistic is called the U-6 unemployment rate... this calculation adds back in the folks the "political unemployment rate", carves off to sound good. For January 2015 the official U-6 unemployment rate was 10.5% up from 9.8% in December

If you haven't figured it out yet, unemployment figures are massaged and run through the fed before being divulged. They're rarely realistic and usually 3 to 4 times higher than published. E.g. 15% is more accurate.
