Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

When will oil companies start hiring again

When will oil companies start hiring again?

  • the cycle starts in services, then consulting and finally E&P

  • current talk is price recovery to $50 by the end of 2016 and maybe hiring in 2017

  • there have been impressive gains in efficiency now the industry has had time to catch its breath

  • E&P's have kept substantial amounts of staff in this cycleand have no need to hire agin until $80 oil

  • what is the attrition rate for folks retiring / leaving from oil companies other than layoff

The day after COP is swallowed by a real and well managed oil company. Mainly to replace the low class, bad mannered and highly spoiled COP employees.

Not today, not tomorrow, not this week, not this month! But as oil price bottoms out and finds stability and starts increasing to $45-50 range and natural gas increase. It will a while and my guess and it is only a guess at this point is 2018. Wish I had more confidence in the turn around but I remember the 80's.

Hiring will begin when mega-investors start backing E&P companies, and that won't happen for a long time. $80 oil for a few months is only a worm dangling on a hook for major investors, who know from experience that can be jerked out of the water in a week.

It too six years for the business to return to normal after the 1986 crash.

they should start hiring again when the oil price goes up significantly and who knows when that will happen. It's anyone's guess.

In the meantime, while waiting for this sector of the economy to turn around, if you want a career in oil, can you say, "Do you want fries with that?"

No cycle. The shale revolution is over; not that it ever started. $1 trillion investment. Prices below the cost of doing business is not efficiency.
