Take a look at all the American companies that are doing this. There is no loyalty to employees anywhere. It's all about the bottom line and the stockholders. It's a very sad situation, it's about greed. Not growing a company that people are proud to work for but making more money. Is this the new American way? I've seen it happen in my community with manufacturers and service providers. Twice in my own family have people been let go because of mergers or bankruptcies by companies that are run by incompetent CEOs who only pander to the stockholders. I wish the best for us all who go to work everyday and do our jobs to the best of our ability.

You don't know what a moral and ethical principle is... apparently the owners don't either.
Oh Boo hoo..... you get paid BIG MONEY to handle those responsibilities. Meanwhile you are giving the shaft to the rest of us. Did it ever occur to YOU that a little loyalty towards your hard working hourly employees might make them happier and work harder? That treating us with respect and great working conditions would earn our loyalty and trust? I know I work better when I look up to management and feel respected for my hard work. I bet YOU probably still get your raise, bonus, health insurance, and profit sharing because it's in your contract. SPARE ME YOUR SOB STORY YOU HACK! I bet you never worked as hard as we do a day in your life. Graduated with your big degree then sat in your corporate office thinking you know everything. I want to spit!
Have you ever had a SINGLE MOMENT'S THOUGHT about my responsibilities? Have you ever thought, for a single solitary moment about my responsibilities to my employers? Has it ever occurred to you that I have agreed to look after Follett. Does it MATTER TO YOU AT ALL that the OWNERS have placed their COMPLETE CONFIDENCE and TRUST in me, and that I have signed a letter of agreement, a CONTRACT, in which I have accepted that RESPONSIBILITY? Do you have the SLIGHTEST IDEA, what a MORAL AND ETHICAL PRINCIPLE IS, DO YOU? Has it ever occurred to you what would happen to my future, if I were to fail to live up to my responsibilities? Has it ever occurred to you? HAS IT?
I worked at Sears for 12 years before joining Follett and it was a great place to work until the very end.
Those days a long gone. No. There are a lot of good companies that respect their employees and their employees respect the company and leadership back. It creates loyalty and a good working envirnoment. Yes there are companies like WalMart, Amazon, Best Buy and now Follett to name a few who treat their employees like hardware, I won't even go as far to day say they treat their employees likes dogs because most dogs get treated better. It creates a revolving door because people aren't going to consider it a career, barely a career path to something better. It's done for a paycheck this pay period. That is the expectations on both sides of the fence. Good luck with that. It doesn't sound very rewarding.
There are many companies that are not going through this and don't treat their employees like this. Just look at some of the other retailers on this site.
All companies adjust staff that is a fact, but most companies do not destroy peoples careers both those that are let go and those that are in the future layoff que.
Few employees that remain are happy to work at Follett. it is now a job. How many companies are market leaders when their employees treat it like a job.
Those days a long gone.
The trite observation that it's not just Follett rings hollow. It isn't just Follett, you're right. I've been in plenty of organizations that didn't value longevity and experience. They pay a price in employee churn. It's expensive to hire and to train. Follett isn't doing that. Follett is failing. Follett has come apart at the seams. The working stiff is taking the brunt of the failure (that's not new either).
Please bring back the days when companies and employees where loyal to each other. The day of good days pay for a good days work. The day of working your whole career with one company and retiring with a great retirement package. They day when everyone cared about if you had a family life. The day when no worked Saturday's and Sunday's. The day no one shopped Saturday or Sunday's. The day holidays where shared with family and friends at a park. Not in line waiting to get your 10th 72 inch tv just because it is 75% off. The day that no worried about where they where located on the Forbes rich list. The day that everyone looked out for one and another. It is way too easy to get sucked into living the way society thinks we should be living versus how we really want to live our lives. I pray every day "Please give me the strength and power to take my life back to live the way I want to live". Family, friends and faith. With the three, nothing else matters.
