Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

No One Cares About You Other Than You

Friends, family and this message board help with the emotional and psychological pain, but you are basically on your own. What are you going to do? Sit on your butt and spend severance pay until the industry picks up in 1-2 years? Move back home with mom and dad? Get a job waiting tables or working as a stripper at The Men's Club? (Mmmm?) Drink yourself to death like the movie Leaving Las Vegas? For me, I will probably take early social security and all my money and just get the hell out of Houston to some small cheap town. What about you?

This is an unfortunate situation for MANY and as American's do, most live beyond their means. Getting stuck in this oil crunch is nothing to be embarrassed about. Pick yourself up by the boot strap, be grateful that you have parents to go home to and start over.....there is no room for self pity, just hard work and the belief that you can do this.

How embarrassing to move back home with your parents as a failure and transfer your burden to them, if they take you. Or maybe take on 2-3 crappy part time Jobs that you hate. Or set up a go fund me site to panhandle off the internet. Better yet, just get started in a whole new industry. Not easy if you are petroleum engineer, exploration geophysicist or geologist. Want to start over at $12 -$15 an hour in the environmental field. This whole situation just really sucks. I do not have an answer. People here talk about retirement and goofing off, but it is not easy to be Not Busy doing some kind of work. Face it, ultimately we, ourselves, are all we have.

You bet I'm looking after Number 1 (aka, Me). The taxes taken out of my last paycheck and severance, will be the last real taxes I will ever pay. My game plan is already running and any taxes, if any, that I pay will be next to nothing.

Yea the early retirement sounds good, i was looking into it myself, you know you still have to pay taxes, but for $2500 a month and the taxes you will have to pay at the end of the year is $ 2000, not a bad deal to collect for 11 months and pay back 1 month for taxes. they say you are not entitled to SSI. you don't know how long you will live so might as well collect and have in hand now. the Gov't already is taking money out of SSI.

@wrq, I beat you to the punch. I moved in with my 79 year old Mom before getting EOI'ed. Now I can wake up at the crack of noon and hit the sack after midnight.

I am going to move back home with my Mom. She is 85 years old and she will cook and clean for me! I'm stoked!

No, there are people out there that care. I have found that the people in this world who really care are the Christians.
