During bad times now, they will just layoff both the husband and wife at the same time. Same dept but different role reporting different manager and still got chop.
See in Nisku Canada we have had problems not only with brother being boss of brother, but a click of outsiders from the the other side of the nation awkwardly running the company for the last few years.
There is a reason why Sperry in the rest of the world answered market conditions with reduced office staff, but Canada refused to. In doing so it priced Sperry out with too much overhead.
So when you lose your job next week, just remember much of it can be traced to a party back at home base with no one watching the farm as it burned.
Gawd i worked many years with a couple that ended up getting married . What a joke and a mess. And yes HR turned the other way .

HR will look the other way. I know of a prime example. HR knows about it, has done nothing.
