Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Getting a promotion in QCT mean you have to be VISIBLE to the top brass like director or above.

No matter how hard you worked, don't dream of getting one if you are not one of their favorite pet.

Way tooooo many promotions to senior level...sr staff, dir, sr dir and VP,this time around.

Since last year it took forever for good productive engineers to move to sr staff.... man the amount of politics and explanations, justifications was amazingly disgusting. And looks like this time they are just handing out these like freebies. The organization is no more a pyramid but looking more like a rectangle... evryone gets promoted. No real recognition. Looks like the promo policies swing from one extreme end to another...

Where have you been - this is biz as usual. Read your review, usually between the lines it means "be more vocal and visible". The indians are great at this, hot-air machines in meetings and CC everyone in sight, yet can't produce.

Average day of engineer hoping to climb the corporate ladder at QCT:

1 hours per day sending irate emails to other teams telling them you need them to finish critical work so that you can complete yours.

2 hours per day sending irate emails to other team members pointing out their screw-ups, and reminding telling them that their f---uppery will cost all of us bonuses and promotions at review time.

1 hour sending emails to project manager, project lead, director, and anyone else you can think of, how much you have been able to accomplish DESPITE the screw-ups of your coworkers--with cc's of earlier emails.

1 hour of bitching on new iPhone to friends about working with unresponsive project managers, project lead, director, etc. while tracking your stock portfolio's performance.

1 hour break for lunch and a p--p.

spend next 5 hours pretending to code while surfing Facebook and other social media.

2 hour break for dinner at Building K--Project Lead is expensing it so it's FREE!

Spend 2 more hours at office pretending to code while answering work and personal emails and sending smutty texts to GF.

So true. My previous manager said to make sure that whatever I do is 'visible.' I didn't understand this because I was productive and doing good work. But I notice in my current team, the members spend a lot of time promoting themselves, especially with expanding the already humongous process. Most do no real worthy work.

Intel is 100% identical.

You need to spend a huge amount of your time working on your "visibility". Some spend 100% of their time on it, doing nothing usefull.

Give it a rest. This has all been covered at length.... Management is well aware of the promotion policies, and how corrupt and unfair it is. They just choose to do nothing about it. Simply because that is how they themselves got promoted. Qualcomm way I guess.
