Thread regarding DeVry Inc. layoffs

Desperate or Stupid

Dear Existing and Miserable Faculty,

Stop complaining and wake up! You should have resigned when you realized that the ship was sinking and apparently you made the decision to continue to work for DECRY. DECRY is using you up and will dispose of you to soon.

There are some mgm in admissions that are concerned with moving up to being an Ada then da then nat da etc and don't give 2 hoots about the students . They only care about their own pay stub

Read where all the issues are. Look at the reviews. The issues are in finance. Longest hold times ever, inconsistent answers, and they screw up accounts all the time. Now if you google Devry student finance you will see the bad publicity with thousands of reviews. Tho it's the Internet and we all know most of it to not be true but perception is reality sometimes. 30-45 minute hold times while management is in meetings. In addition, student services and academics both have 30-45 minute hold times. Why doesn't leadership pick up the phones and lend a hand. Lazy, lazy, lazy!! Admissions gets a bad rap but their leadership works extremely hard.

@HWXmG6t-1ypl, is anyone in admissions saying anything to management? If so, what is management's response? Did you document this in writing? If so, what was their response?

If no one says anything to management, Devry will continue down a miserable path.

Admissions works in fear, in that, if they do not recruit enough students they will lose their jobs. Therefore, they feel pressure to get students to start. Local and Home Office leadership drives this terrible culture. I would love to see Rob Paul, Steve Riehs or Erik Dirst recruit a student for an 80k degree that is worth 8 cents!

Trust that I know what I am talking about. I use to be 'under the tent' as DVG leadership likes to say.

Shame on you DeVry, shame, shame shame.

OMG, Admissions is the worst. When I first started teaching at DeVry, I mostly taught Game and Simulation Programming (GSP) courses. I can't even say how many times students from other programs would say they wanted to major in GSP but Admissions kept insisting it was an art degree.

An art degree?!? The P stands for PROGRAMMING! I wanted to scream. So even back in the days when DVU was doing "well", we still had an Admissions department derailing careers before they could even get started.

Admissions is definitely a huge problem. I'm a professor who just happened to be around when an admissions "advisor" brought in a prospective student with questions about our technology programs. The student told me she wanted to be a software engineer, but the admissions people were aggressively pressuring her to enroll in the CET program -- an electronics degree. She was severely agitated that nobody but me would listen to what she was saying. I explained her actual options so she could make an informed choice, and was later told by my boss that the admissions director was unhappy with me for it. My boss was on my side, but it's still a solid example of what's wrong with our business practices.

There are lots of management in online that works with students including registrar student finance and student affairs. It sounds like admissions is where the issues lie

I think the distinction here is in regards to local vs. national management. Local management is very involved in the day-to-day experience of students. Some of them are genuinely concerned for them and their success. National management, on the other hand, has proven beyond the shadow of a doubt, time and time again, that they haven't the slightest idea how campuses run, what faculty do, or what students need and want. The last round of layoffs is just one exhibit in a lengthy stream of evidence to the fact.

Plenty of good people in leadership that speak to students on a daily basis? Besides people in admissions, name them? Where are they?

I would caution you not to paint leadership and/or management with such a broad brush. There are plenty of good people working here that put the students first and speak with them on a regular basis. If you do not see that at your location, I'm sorry, but please do not assume to speak to the actions of those you do not see. This is a time for everyone to step up and lead by example, not to tear each other down.

LOL Awesome! Like the Hall and Oates maneater song!! Any university where leadership and management don't feel it's within their job description to speak to students daily or when needed is going to fail. Does it really surprise you they cutting hard working faculty??? It makes me sick to see how little they care about something that can be so great.
