Mothers against predatory colleges

Moms, Happy Mothers Day. And please don't encourage your kids to sign up at ITT-Tech. Your kids won't get the education they need, and it will waste the money they will need later for a real education.

I am a former employee, and a Mom. It is mind boggling how corrupt ITT-Tech is. Being part of this organization is like being in a cult. The mission statement, the mottos, with-holding information from students, the constant demand for more money from students, it is downright creepy. Many, many employees are followers who do whatever they are told to, and lie to the students left and right just as their "leader," the CEO, tells them. Employees and students are brainwashed.

I needed the income, I told myself, to rationalize working at this bogus school as an instructor. I was a good instructor, and gave students their moneys worth, I rationalized further. But it haunted me that the classes seemed a waste of time for most people, many of the students the same age as my kids.

I started thinking how awful it would be if one of my own kids had wasted time and money and effort in a bad school, instead of the wonderful education they got at state schools. One of my children went through some ups and downs in high school and community colleges, but finally found a certificate program at a community college that fits him perfectly. He never had to take out any loans and is doing well in his new career . My other child went to a state university and is now making tons of money in software technology. Neither of them would have gotten a fraction of the education, for ten times the price, by going to ITT-Tech or other predatory for profit. They totally understand I had to quit my job at ITT-Tech to keep from feeling like a scumbag.

ITT-Tech doesn't know how to educate people, they know how to manipulate and lie and twist reality. Their programs are very low quality -- the materials provided to instructors are poorly organized, and the sequence of classes does not make sense. Students can't be expected to do well in this poorly structured environment. Instructor experience and education often does not qualify them adequately for classes they are told to teach. A few lucky students succeed to some extent by teaching themselves, but most graduates end up with a very poor quality education.

ITT-Tech's accrediting agency, ACICS, enables ITT-Tech to carry out their scam. ACICS does not do a good job of overseeing ITT-Tech at all. Both ITT-Tech and ACICS are under investigation by many government agencies and consumer groups.

If you are a Mom and an employee or former employee of ITT-Tech, do your duty and write a letter to your congressman, ACICS, and attorney general, and expose this fraud. I am.

I disagree they can have a good product. A Honda Civic for $400,000 is never going to be a good value, and whatever teaching quality ITT Tech tries to create will never be worth the incredibly destructive debt load they put on those least able to pay for it.

Now they sometimes list non-existent (gone for >1 year) instructors, deans and chairs in their catalogs, which have been sent to ED & ACICS.

Listing a blank does not represent to prospective students as well as inserting a ghost's name (as though they were still working there in the position, along with their credentials).

David Halperin and Robert Shireman, can do a little investigating and find out a lot.

...and they have to go schools like ITT Tech to actually start a career.... That is a completely ridiculous statement.

ITT can have a good product, but now they've eliminated almost all of the full-time experienced faculty, cut out many, many of the program chairs--leaving tattered remnants all over. It has become a parade of academic people. Now they sometimes list non-existent (gone for >1 year) instructors, deans and chairs in their catalogs, which have been sent to ED & ACICS. Some of the students can barely write a simple, short, coherent sentence (lowering product reputation)--indirectly hurting the top students.

I have had many friends graduate from ITT Tech and Are doing extremely well in a career they are career focused type of programs that do help the students and give them actually hands-on training just because of the actions of certain individuals in the company does not mean that the product is not a good product. And as far as your talk about a state school. I have had many more friends graduate from a state school with zero to little experience and are still looking for work and they have to go schools like ITT Tech to actually start a career.

The catalog for Norwood, OH published in March 2016 is a pack of lies. The dean listed had been gone for 9 months. The asst. dean listed was also gone for a similar length of time. Many of the listed adjuncts had not taught there for 6-12 months and wouldn't return because the place had turned into an academic sham.

ACICS - if you are serious about getting to the bottom of the ITT sham then simply require contact details of all academic staff who have taught at an ITT campus in the past three years. Interviewing them should be quite revealing!

@2qzp, please write letters about this to ACICS!

I just checked the catalog of the campus I am familiar with, and I see some mistakes as well! Two chairs are listed in the March 2016 updated catalog, but in reality one of them quit in September 2015 and has not been replaced, and the other was laid off in early December 2015! There have been no chairs for several months. This is going in my letter to attorney general and ACICS.

Modany brags about chairs for every program, what a friggin' liar. So great to have solid evidence showing ITT-Tech lies.

Here's an ACICS exerpt on stability, that surely does not describe ITT-Tech:

STABILITY:

There shall be an adequate core of full- and/or part-time faculty to ensure sound direction and continuity of development for the educational programs. The institution shall demonstrate through outcomes, length of service, reasonable retention of faculty, and other measures that the core faculty ensures that the institution will meet its stated mission and objectives. The institution shall promote stability in the faculty through compensation, fringe benefits, professional growth opportunities, and other incentives.

The ITT catalogs portray, at least in some cases, deans, chairs, faculty, and advisory board members that no longer exist--been gone for 1 or 2 or more years due to dismissal, resignation, or other reasons. For example, the present online Norwood catalogs STATES: Published March 31, 2016 Effective 03/31/2016-3/31/2017 The information contained in this catalog was ACCURATE at the time of publication. Following publication... yet to my knowledge the listed dean has been gone since around June 2015, 1 listed dept chair was gone over a year, and at least one nursing instructor and maybe others have been gone for some time (full timers could be checked by payroll). ACICS also requires sign in sheets for the advisory board members attending the "board" meetings" (which they won't be able to produce, for many of them been absent very long time). This might (or might not) be seen at other campus locations.

Taken from ACICS:

CATALOG

The Council requires all accredited institutions and all applicant institutions to publish an acceptable catalog....It must not be primarily a promotional publication, nor should it be directed toward a single segment of its varied audience. The catalog has been determined by the courts to be a legal document of the institution concerned....At a minimum, the catalog must contain the following items:

.....

  1. A listing of the full-time faculty members, showing:

(a) academic credentials held;

(b) institutions awarding the credentials; and

(c) the area of teaching specialization.

I can understand why people may continue to work at ITT Tech--especially teachers and librarians. I do hope that all of you, while you are still there, can inform students about educational choices, student rights and their options with reporting to agencies. Documentation is very helpful, but the NUMBER of complaints actually makes a difference with the VA, FTC, CFPB and other agencies. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to facilitate these opportunities.

I taught for a while at ITT in Norwood, OH and that place is a joke. If an instructor doesn’t have a high enough pass rate in a class than an email from corporate stops them teaching the class again. That is done under the pretense that the pass rate is a reflection of the instructor’s teaching skills rather than anything to do with how well the program matches the recruited students or how hard the student worked. What a joke – ACICS where are you? !!!

Traci the director at Norwood, OH always liked to end emails with a comment saying “thank you for changing student’s lives”. Despite that she seemed quite happy to see capable instructors barred from teaching a module and somebody with no teaching experience being thrown into a first quarter class with 45 students – classes that could have well done with two highly experienced instructors. From comments I heard several of the more experienced students seemed to have figured out just how sincere Traci was about having their interest at heart.

The campus would go on drives to have students complete surveys despite the fact that the students opinions were routinely ignored. All that mattered was keeping the survey completion rate high enough to keep corporate happy.

One particularly shocking thing about Norwood is that the director Traci flaunted her M.Ed in her email signature yet seemed to have no interest whatsoever in academic standards. At one point the dean was let go (a well-liked, well-respected and effective dean) probably because some magical number such as retention was below corporate expectations. Traci promptly appointed her buddy Emily to fill the position despite Emily having no discernible experience relevant to such a position. The adjunct faculty gave a collective sigh and realized that this was the final proof that ITT had no interest in academic standards.

I hear that since then the place has shrunk. The director is also the dean (hysterical), the finance director is also the registrar, there is barely a librarian left and possibly no chairs other than nursing. The reputation of the campus locally is as low as is possible and many of us simply will not teach there.

It is clear from what I have been told by other instructors that the situation at ITT Norwood, OH is not unusual and that many or perhaps all campuses have similar issues. The sooner they are all gone the better it will be for the USA.

@ntg, nIce you are debt free and got a good education. I hear the ITT-Tech programs were much better a number of years ago. More competitive to get into, and higher expectations of the students, and better classes, etc. And reputation of graduates was much better many years ago, than now, according to the stories I hear.

I was provided outstanding knowledge and opportunity through the EET program- it opened many doors for me. Unfortunately, 9-11-01 provided a huge smoke and mirrors for the tech sector to change the game, and most corporations want(ed) to only promote those with ABET accredited degree programs - which is solely political. How do I know, because I am in an ABET accredited program now and the level of knowledge through the public community colleges and universities is sh!t outside of the cores. I wonder how much Devry paid to get in the game. I still would never allow my child to sign up for the ridiculous debt these schools want. Fortunately I am debt free.
