Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Was Qualcomm trying to be everything to everyone?

Been in Q a few years and reflecting back on all the things that i have seen come and go. Smart Watches, TV gadet, robots/robot investment. Now drones, server chips, and iot stuff. I kind of agree with the server chips, but Q got lucky that intel wasted a butt load of money trying to catch up on smart phone market, layoffs, killed moral, wasted more money on guys like murthy.

One director i know admitted that "Q copies everyone and now we told we have to be different". But what do you guys think? Q over reaches? And what other tech attempt flops you seen in last 3 years? What other areas Q should get out of now?

Nice feedback from many. I think Q is now at a situation where they are throwing in as many different products out there to see what sticks. It is a poor strategy but hoping one or two will stick. The cellphone market itself was just one of many markets that ended up flying high and Q was positioned well to ride the wave. But now Q is lost and is in fishing mode with server, IoT, automobiles, etc. Having a robot in every house is not a bad idea -- if it takes off in 5-10 years time, I am just saying that generically. Unfortunately company has grown too big and pigs are ruling the mid-management blocking progress. The top execs are jokers as well.

Qualcomm ABSOLUTELY has what it takes to innovate and compete in new markets.

But the morons at the top always pick old ideas that only a baby-boomer would use.

Stupid things like Blockbuster movies beamed into your pocket in the grocery store.

Even stupider things like broadcast TV over cellphones - a great 1970's idea.

The people at the top have to stop vetting ideas if the company is going to succeed.

Qualcomm: It's not a product unless coding theorists can improve it!

OtherCompanies: It's a product if it makes money !!

How does Q expect to innovate when they hire engineers that come from countries that haven't even learned to use toilets?

Q has milked away the cell phone graveyard train for decades ; it was good while it lasted; but now Christmas is over and there is foreseeable solution to it.

High end Cell phone chip is Q core business; with consolidation and commodization of this market at the lower end, Q is being squized by cheaper south east Asian competitors, among others; the question is how are they going to make up for lost revenue in other segments of the market? it's not obvious they can.

Qualcomm will be successful in all these areas and will make a vast amount of money and will compensate its employees accordingly. Now get back to work.

Every new tech that Qualcomm is trying to get into already has some established leaders. Qualcomm is not a leader. They only succeed when no one else is in the market. They have no way to significantly compete in drones, automotive, IOT or servers. The inroads they've made in these areas has been done the same way Intel did with cellphones. They are finding small bit players and paying them to use their technology. Qualcomm doesn't have the ability to innovate and is losing ground daily.

Cost reduction thru layoffs, outsourcing to cheaper regions is not the answer to increasing revenue. Titanic is well on its way to the bottom

Like any other chip company, Q is trying to increase revenue in a declining cell phone market due mainly to cheaper competitors; it is a tall order considering all these pet projects Don't really contribute to the top line of the core business. Going forward it is going hard to predict the future; essentially all these projects are trials to see which one may work.

If history is any indication to the future, Q will continue to flop in these new areas of drones, server chips, and iot. The management structure, politics, and reward system simply isn't one that help to foster new innovation.
