Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

Wishing to be a fly on a wall today

I'd love to be a fly on a wall today and just watch the emails fly from executives down to the managers. Ron has to be livid, but, of course had he not POed Obama, this may have gone through. Remember managers, cascade those emails to your team. I'm sure a conference call has been or will be scheduled.

I already started busting a co-workers chops about this.... can just picture him stopping at Hooters on the way to a delivery and arriving with wing sauce all over his face and reeking of beer.

"Delivery out of stores? Can't wait to see how this works. Stores are on skeleton crews and they're going to have someone run out to make deliveries?"

You have to be kidding? They can't even have their contract couriers make deliveries on time and without smelling the customers office up! What, is the driver going to get a magnetic, light up sign like Dominoes?

Have not been with the company for a few years did not know Tom died. I had him visit my store before he was a unique and brilliant man.

Stemberg probably would be devasted by what's going on but, unfortunately, he's dead. The company e-mail was just like every other one they sent out after earnings calls. No matter how bad the numbers are they spin it so associates think the company is moving in the right direction. They think everybody is stupid and buys into their propaganda. Treat your employees like crap and they will perform like crap. It's an awful feeling going to work everyday wondering "will today be the day I get let go."

It's all just lip service to cover their asses and pretend they have a plan.

Employee retention??? How do you expect to RETAIN associates when you give everyone the same 1.5% raise REGARDLESS of their effort??? There are a large number of associates that have worked their asses off for this company and to get the same piddly raise as the ones who barely get anything done! Yo won't retain many with decisions like that!

The company started going down hill the day Tom s. Stepped down and Ron took over. Tom has to be very sad to see what ron did to his company

No more annual performance appraisals?

I guess they got rid of everyone they wanted to through "does not meet expectations" PIPS

They should have included, "We were arrogant enough not to call a witness and rest our case. We thought it was in the bag." Another poorly thought out plan of execution, but, that doesn't surprise me.

Reminds me of the scene in "The Big Short" where everyone was laid off and they had a guy in the lobby yelling like a town crier :

"Go directly to your transportation, do NOT talk to the press"

Associates should flood The Globe with comments about Sargent needing to be removed for Staples to move forward.

The official policy is SILENCE. Take a look:

"Dear Staples Associates,

Earlier today you saw the announcement that a federal judge has ruled against Staples in favor of the FTC’s request for preliminary in--nction to block our acquisition of Office Depot. We believe it is in the best interest of our shareholders, customers and associates to forego appealing this decision, terminate the merger agreement, and move on with our strategic plan to drive shareholder value.

Please refrain from talking about today’s court decision or making any unprofessional comments – internally or externally. Please continue to be careful with what you do, say, or write about the decision or the companies that testified at the hearing so that your comments will not be misconstrued. Remember the common sense test about emails: would I or Staples be embarrassed if this email were published on the front page of the Wall Street Journal?"
