Why is Google rolling out fttp if this technology will be obsolete in 5 years? Wireless is the future? no?

I had wireless 120 years ago for crissakes...
Speaking about the east coast/NYC, the Cell towers run on the the same fiber lines that have been around for 20+ years. They provide for VzW, at&t, T-Mobile, Sprint, etc. All Providers of cell service run through Verizon Wireline installed and maintained Fiber. In NYC and I'm sure its the same with other major cities up and down the east coast, they use the same old fiber. All the new fiber is for FiOS and 99.9% is used just for it. What VZ should do is start building a Wi-Fi network to go along with its FiOS build-out. Plenty of extra fibers already available for this.
Uh, ALL the VZW towers in my area all connect to VZ owned lines, not leased. And to make things crazier, we installed the lines a few years back. I guess someone should report this to McScabums, we obviously screwed up somewhere..
Linknyc
Nyc free wifi hubs seem to bypass verizon. But they run thru verizon owned manholes
"It sounds like the union people need to be given classes/training on VzW."
It sure sounds like you could use some education in this respect yourself.
In most cases, the circuitry to the cell tower - whether it belongs to VZW, AT&T, Sprint or T-Mobile - is provided by ILEC. There are cases where the cable companies were contracted to run the fiber but these are more of an exception than a rule.
So, in truth, the vast majority of these circuits located in the territories that are currently on strike are maintained by the very people who are on strike.
Google Fiber for Google is kind of hobby project. Same as internet from balloons. Google's main business gives them so much money, they can try all sorts of things to see what sticks. For VZ on the other hand wireline is one of core areas. You can't even compare.
Wireless is great as the cheap, bastard, b-grade broadband solution.
oiz ---- hey moron, why lease when you have it supplied to you and cut costs?
Do these union morons not understand that a) VZW leases it's wireline backhaul from other carriers besides VZ and b) Even the small percentage of VzW circuits that are VZ owned having nothing to do with the union workers?
I keep seeing these posts from union people which make it obvious that they have no idea how VzW operates it's network.
If Verizon shut down all of it's wireline network tomorrow the wireless network would still be running like it always does. VzW's network is 100% leased and the vast majority comes from non-Verizon companies. In fact, Verizon Telecom is just another vendor to VzW like Level 3 or AT&T.
It sounds like the union people need to be given classes/training on VzW.
pcf ---- You got to be kidding, Money drives technology not if it has wires or not. You must have a degree in stupid.
I mean come on, lets be real here.. even Power is going Solar... IF you think there are going to be wires hanging for phone service in 5 years you have to be completely crazy .... lolol
The future is blasting laser beams from the top of the COs to the cell towers.
" Its just completely misunderstood. Wireless is absolutely dependent on Wireline!!!" True to a point, but how many techs do you need to cover wireless towers and how many AA's and Dispatch, etc....
Actually, if there was a union involved or not, Google would actually know how to accept the challenge in dealing with a union and still be profitable, dealing with it & not make excuses, in order to go about and make their creation come to fruition.
Sergey Brin & Larry Page are innovative go-getters who think outside the box and would love to embarrass a head-in-the-sand, old-guard company like VZ. They would actually relish the thought of sticking it to VZ. Kind of like what John Legere is doing to VZ now at T-Mobile
Google is an example of a company with a vision and a plan that gets things done, unlike VZ, that still thinks it's 1998 and AOL is all the rage
This is the biggest misconception out there, that Wireless is replacing Wireline and that there is some competition between the two. Its just completely misunderstood. Wireless is absolutely dependent on Wireline!!! The only part of the signal chain that is Wireless is from your wireless phone to the nearest cell tower and with small cells this distance is shrinking RAPIDLY, the rest of the chain is WIRELINE!. Eventually it will only be the last 50-100 feet that will be Wireless and and ALL the rest will be Wireline! Someone is going to build a MASSIVE Wireline Fiber Optic network. Its not a question of IF it will be built, it's merely a question of by whom. Will it be Verizon or someone else?
Google also will go where they want and when they want, no union to worry about and no POTS... They will go to major cities and deploy there. POTS is the big problem here, and I know your not stupid and probably don't have DSL or POTS phone at your house, so you can easily see what direction your job is going... The writing is on the wall, look for jobs now before your too old to find one.. the good ole days are gone unfortunately, sorry but that is the absolute truth not matter how bad it may sound. I see another 5 years depending on your job title, sorry to be bearer of bad new, just the reality.. I moved on, you can too
"What you don't seem to understand is that the physical transmission is not where the money is at."
Right. That's why the rest of the world is rolling out fiber left, right and center, and has been for more than a decade. All these stupid European and Asian telecoms and ISPs. They don't know anything.
Go to sleep, please...
Will Google buy MySpace before VZ gets to it? They better hurry. LowMac is on the warpath.
If Lowell were in charge of Google things would change. He thinks 75 years ahead. A frigging telecom genius, in his own mind.
Fiber is head over heels better than wireless, The new technology for copper transmission is better than wireless. Google is a well oiled company and does everything well.
Because carriers are getting out of the business and Google wants to own the customer relationship from premise to content and everything in between.
The transmission part of the equation has become a commodity, but Google would get the revenue from the content plus own the customer. What you don't seem to understand is that the physical transmission is not where the money is at.
Google does fiber better , faster and cheaper.
