Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Finally! Out of this miserable dump.

My last day at Qualcomm was 2 weeks back. And I am joining one of the big fours in bay area. Feels very good. Miserable experience at the Linux Android team! I would not be surprised if the experience across all groups are the same. Sharing some of the bad management's skills I have seen in LA team, the dirs in particular.

Pretty unskilled managers who lack empathy completely and are arrogant and have extreme sense of entitlement... they are still around amazingly. ex:. The bald idiot director who is an old timer cruising through.

I recall a scenario where my child was sick and I had to rush to the urgent care on a Saturday morning and the bald idiot setup a meeting early saturday morning only, that he did not attend the whole meeting because he had to take his kids to some practice. But when I told him I could not attend since I needed to take my kid to urgent care it fell on his deaf bald ear.. his response was "don't care, the issue is too urgent for my absence"...... had to take the call while driving and caring for my child... abusive jerk, total lack of empathy!

Glad I am out of there!

@3cdg: 100% agreed; yet Q gets away from being prosecuted from class action lawsuit. Other companies get class action from investors, employees for much less than Qualcomm has done. QCOM is one of the most corrupt publicly traded company in North America.

1gly: "workplace bullying" clause is not a binding law. It is just a recommendation and therefore a company can not be sued for doing that. HR knows this very well and that is why they do not care.

HR's "Qualcomm Way" booklet is a joke. In March of this year (2016) they paid SEC $7.5m settlement for bribing Chinese officials by hiring their unqualified relatives with the direct involvement of an HR director. In June of last year (2015) a former senior executive was sentenced to 18 month in prison for insider trading. Two engineers jumped to their deaths from Qualcomm buildings in 2010 and 2012 and HR blamed it on the victims having "personal problems" rather than admitting it had anything to do with the abusive and sweatshop working conditions that they have created.

I also left Q some time ago and joined a small company. I had similar experiences and some even worse. We need to vote with our actions, since trying to stay in the company and change the culture is almost impossible. Unfortunately good line managers and leads are the exception in Q.

Before I quit, I had been really sick for a few days--vomiting and everything--and took time off, although I was trying to work from home. Next performance review the PM devoted about one paragraph to all of the stuff I did really well, and spent the rest of the review btching about how I had let the team down because I failed to show up that weekend, and threatened to put me on a PIP. Who needs that sht.

itym: I think California work hour regulation does not apply to "exemp" or "salaried" employees. I heard it first hand from an HR director in Qualcomm. There is no law to protect us against such abuses that occur at Qualcomm. Please correct me if I am wrong.

@OP: Congrats man!!

I've been there myself a couple months ago. Try to focus on the new awesomeness and joy in your life. The anger and rage towards qualcomm doesn't fade easy. And my manager was actually nice. Hopefully you'll overcome it easier ;)

OP Congrats and I am happy for you. Majority of the QCOM employees face similar issues and HR DOES NOT care about it.. HR is meant for the benefit of the company not the employees and its only role is to make sure that the company does not get sued by the employees.. Even in my team its similar culture.. I was told that a director from some other team needs some results and it is super critical.. I pinged the other director he told me it is not that critical.. The company is run by threatening the employees not by educating them...

According to California law, an employee is not supposed to work more than 8 hours a day, unless overtime is being compensated ; the reality is obviously different but this is the law; of course it doesn't work quite that way for software companies due to the nature of the industry.

@1je: If you are or were in Qualcomm you would know the answer to that. I think OP is referring to one and only bald guy. In my experience this guy is quiet disingenuous and untrustworthy!

I was working at Qualcomm a few years ago and my life was miserable due to very poor and unprofessional managers practice. I got an offer from one of the big players in the Bay Area and I turned it down because I sensed the same entitlement and arrogance from my new manager if I would joined. The team at that big company in the Bay Area was full of foreigners from only one country, which was a red flag, as we all already know why that is the case. The sign on bonus, stock option, and salary were on par, however, from my experience at Qualcomm I learned that money doesn't necessarily equal happiness. I took a position at a smaller company and I couldn't be any happier. I have learned a lot in my new position and I am being treated fairly.

Unfortunately, lousy un-emphatetic managers are not unique to Qualcomm, they abound across the software industry and the big four are certainly no exception. PIP'ing patients with cancer is the norm at some companies as you may have read in New York Times. Your experience entirely depends on your immediate manager, the company and HR departments are all the same anywhere. Grass is NOT necessarily greener on the other side just because its a big name company. You need to make sure you do your homework on your new boss before you join. Everyone is on their best behavior and on "sell" mode in interviews.

Same experience here. I went through a medical procedure on a Saturday and I was on pain killer to recover from it. My manager told me the next day that he was disappointed with me because I didn't work on that Saturday.

If you complain to HR about your manager on these practices, they would let your manager retaliate against you for complaining about him and HR will support him in any way until they get rid of you through a phony PIP or via some other means.

HR's position on weekend working is that since you are an "exempt employee", there is no rule or regulation about how many hours per week or weekend you can be made to work. They even blame you by saying you were not an efficient worker and that is why you had to work on the weekend to finish your tasks.

HR likes this kind of management because they think they can get more work hours out of you for the same pay.

I had a similar experience at the Modem group. I was seriously sick and I sent a NFW email to my manager informing him that I was leaving for the day because I wasn't feeling well. As soon as he saw my note, he called me on the phone and gave me an assignment to finish before I could leave. That kept me at work until 10pm that day. The management are a group of psychopaths that have full and unconditional support from HR for everything they do.
