Thread regarding DeVry Inc. layoffs

How Do We Stay Open?

My Center started just 6 students in our July Session! This is by far our lowest ever. Staff, faculty and even students are nervous about even more layoffs. How did other locations do? Are there more layoffs coming?

I have a family to support - this is a terrible, I feel like everyday could be my last. I am looking for a new job but no one calls me for an interview. So discouraged.

Of all the predictions that have been made about DeVry's future, the one thing that nearly all of them have in common is the belief that DeVry doesn't have a future. Our group cancelled over 40 classes due to low enrollment this session. We had students enrolled who were new starts, but wisely decided to go elsewhere when their very first classes were all cancelled. No matter how hard DeVry tries to convince us that they're OK and trying to turn things around, their decisions prove that they don't care about continuing. They're deliberately tearing the organization apart piece by piece and the only real question is when our last day will actually be. We know it's soon, but how soon? You know they're not going to give us any advance notice, not more than a few weeks anyway. And that's just for the people who get laid off. There is even less warning for the ones who are fired, and not much more for those who are pressured into resigning.

So, what I'm trying to say is this: Any day could be the last day for any of us. Layoffs are frequent, unnecessary firings and pressured resignations are becoming that way, and the student population is dropping like a rock. How do we stay open? We don't for much longer.

After my metro's terrible class, almost the entire admissions staff has been placed on a 'plan'. Well we all what these plans are, basically a 30 day warning that you are going to be let go. Some that received plans have been long term highly successful recruiters for us. It sure would be fun to see executive leadership try to sell DeVry to a potential student with all the bad press that exists and at the outrageous tuition we charge. Maybe executive leadership can put themselves on a plan, now that is an idea worth entertaining.

Seriously, I thought the days of placing Admissions counselors on plans were over with the new regulatory government rules for college recruitment? How can DeVry continually get away with these practices?

It is disgusting to see how this company operates. Shame on the government or federal regulators for not stepping in. Honestly, it is only a matter of time.

DeVry is concerned with one thing and one thing only: the compensation of its executives and upper level managers. These people do not care about employees, students, faculty, or even shareholders. They do not care if the company continues to exist. They are greedy and are out to get their money and everyone else can just take a flying leap off a cliff. They are going to drive the company into the ground and walk away with their exit packages.

I used to be on the student finance team. Just so everyone knows we issued thousands of dollars of advance refunds (credits) to students and all they had to was come up with some random reason they needed funds. Reasons I have seen range from I need bail money to my wife is pregnant with my 5th child. I believe all this attention on DeVry lately they must have stopped giving out funds like they used to so student's are no longer attending because they can't get their advance credits like they used to. It paid to go to DeVry at the cost of debt to tax payers but I guess this has come to an end. Student's are left with massive debt and pointed credits. Why the hell do you need to spend $3k for a pre algebra class? Makes no sense. This company needs to buried. Get out while you can.
