Thread regarding Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) layoffs

Could you believe an old friend currently working at IBM asked me if he should take an offer he got from HPE?

He is concerned about the continuous layoffs going on within IBM. I didn't know if I should have laughed or cried. I told him to look for a job out of the Tech Industry, and strongly advised not to look at HPE as a "better environment"proposition.

I would not recommend HPE to anyone. Do your friend a favor and tell him to decline and look elsewhere. If he takes the offer, it won't be long until you are not his friend anymore, as in part you'll be responsible for screwing up his life.

I don't think HPE does contracts like that, except maybe if you're VP level or above then maybe.

If the jump to HPE is part of your friends career path just before retirement, then with a well written employment contract if "could" be a good move. i.e. Lay-off notice comes with 10 months severance. Anyone jumping from current job to the "HPE boat" now needs to know they could be gone in 6 months or less. Rumor is CSC's has a goal for 80% off shore ... :-(

The only e-company I would recommend nowadays is Amazon, but it's not for everyone. They will squeeze the last drop of your soul - making you work like an animal, but if you can cope with that, you will learn like crazy, and you will be working for a Company that is not just influencing, but redefining the landscape in several markets. HPE can't compete with AWS. Like one guy said the other day... For 20 steps AWS take, HPE can't even take one. I wouldn't waste my time looking at Dell, Lenovo, Apple, Oracle, etc., and Google & Facebook are almost impossible to get in nowadays unless you are an entry level genius.

I think her/his advice was the right one. HPE is definitively no better option than IBM right now, and the reality is that the Tech Industry is too unstable nowadays (and well, for the last 15 years!). I'm personally looking at other Industries such as Medical Devices, Pharma, Banking, etc., but at least I'll try to avoid pure Tech companies moving forward.

Neither employer is great but the layoffs at IBM are peanuts compared to HPE.
