Xmm7480 dead on arrival

This modem is at least 2 or even 3 generations behind state of the art. Qualcomm are launching a gigabit per second modem this fall ready for inclusion in iPhone 7. Next yearyear Qualcomm will have an even faster modem on 10nm TSMC process. How can Intel possibly sell Apple 28nm TSMC silicon?

The hard lesson Qualcomm is learning from MediaTek, Spreadtrum and now Intel is that OEM's often don't want or need a state of the art modem. QCOM is losing market share to "good enough" modems that that are less featured but meet the market's current and near-term needs for features and reliability. QCOM's 1Gbps support is a good example. There are scarcely any (maybe none?) mobile networks in the world right now that can deliver 1Gbps data speeds. Certainly, these speeds won't be widely available to consumers for at least a couple years, probably longer. So what's the incentive for phone OEMs to pay QCOM extra for this capability right now? Same is true for many other features in QCOM's modems.

If it is dead Apple will happily use Qualcomm and likely just have to pay a bit more as literally giving the thing away.

How do you know that Xmm7480 is dead on arrival. You are leaking internal information which might put you in trouble.

J2HdnVz-xwl Don't you know pigs fly at Intel. Moores law continues on right on schedule and people buy x86 PC because they need them, LOL

If 7480 doesn't fly Intel will immediately close all iCDG sites in Europe guaranteed.

The only reason Apple selected Intel for the modem was similar to them selecting Samsung for the Aps processor.

Picked a second source wh--e and drop them like the wh--e they are once they get price concessions from TSMC. Intel giving it up for almost free, more likely a loss after accounting for wafer costs paid to TSMC and die cherry picking to meet Apple's crazy tight power and performance specs. For 28nm to be competitive Intel is likely throwing away more than 75% of the good die and swallowing the loss as TSCM is paid by the wafer and apples buys by the die. Only stupid s---er here is Intel and BK

"Qualcomm are launching a gigabit per second modem this fall ready for inclusion in iPhone 7." ???

Iphone 7 is going to be launched in about a month's time, we already know what modem is inside.

Intel pays TSMC for the silicon at one price where TSMC makes a healthy profit. Then they sell it at a price that undercuts Qualcomm and is too good a deal for Apple to pass on. I am sure Intel is making a killing on this one, LOL
