Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

The TMT's are behind closed doors and will decide your fate by the end of this month.

My supervisor told me that the TMTs will decide who goes and who stays. I am in operations and have only been with COP for 3 years. Who is on the operations TMT? Is it one person who leads it? it ok to call the TMT to discuss my qualifications?

Bottom line: TMTs are a very expensive extra layer that we can't afford and don't need. Independents don't use them because they understand that running lean and turning a profit means training those who are managers to actually be effective and operate directly and fairly without needing a hollow oversight group. Time to cut the practice of TMTs and run more efficiently. They won't do anything much with the layoffs this round except some high grading work if there's someone on a layoff list that causes significant concern. High grading will be almost non-existent this time around though since so much has already occurred, there just isn't anymore room. Everyone has become fairly apathetic to the whole process and it is clear that very good people have gone in previous rounds and many more will go this time. But the TMTs...don't count on them. Your relationship with your boss and next level manager is much more important. Focus there if you want to stay.

TMT is marginally important. Your boss's boss is very important. The TMT would be more important if they shuffle people around to optimize the talent which they will only do for high pot's

Ryan is not directly involved in layoffs. He gives the number required. HR allocates numbers per business unit. Your VP, manager and HR business partner makes final decision. Your Managers input is key since he ranks the employee. Stop blaming Ryan for racism.

They already have the names... TMT are busy with other pressing issues.

Here is the list of priorities:

  • when is the next mixer?

  • when/where to play gulf

  • when is the next car race (this for VP technology, he is a car racer ...)

-...

-...

-...

  • is the Layoff over?

TMT will spread the slaughtering. They will let go of folks that cost money and have experience and also sprinkle in some folks who don't have that much experience to make things look even. Young white woman and men, African Americans, Latinos, and older white men will get hit. I have yet to see a middle age 12 year white man or woman, African American man or woman, Latino man or woman be layed off. However there is always an exception.... If you are getting paid to much and they can find someone else that is cheaper, inexperienced but can do your job then you are a goner. These are the facts they are looking at the over all salary, insurance, pensions, stock the total package of you are over a certain amount you will be let go regardless of performance. They are cutting cost folks to make the extraction of barrels cheaper. For those of you left after these layoffs do not toot your horn and make it seem like you are better because you were spared because you are not better not are you a better performer. In this industry experience counts for a lot and the company knows this so hey trim from the top and the bottom to even things out.

The TMT's are there to ensure a diversified workforce, both technical and "equal opportunity" so that COP can continue and maybe even grow. Don't kid yourself that they give a rat's a*s about you as an individual. They only know about your role and your ratings and we all know how grossly inaccurate ratings are. The TMT are selecting cattle for slaughter based on their ears tags....

It's worth a shot, but the lists will be finalized next week, if yours hasn't been finalized already. So take of that what you will. Look up TMT on the mark - it's one of the only searches that works on there.

Ask your supervisor who your TMT rep is if you don't know. They don't ultimately decide who goes and who stays, but the TMT comments do carry a lot of weight. My recommendation to the original poster would be to NOT contact his/her TMT rep, it's too late for that. Assuming the TMT does not have anything bad to say about your performance or capabilities, your fate resides with your BU management.
