Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

When I started with Chevron in 1980 the vacation rule was you received your first vacation "in the year of your first anniversary." So we went the first year earning our vacation and went without vacation for the first year. So when they change the vacation earning to the current year is Chevron paying everyone for the vacation they did not get in their first year?

I was laid off last June and Chevron was so "good" to make an "exception" and pay out the vacation that I had already earned. Just wondering how Chevron is handling the people who had already earned their whole year vacation on Jan 1 under the old rules. Do they have to earn their vacation twice?

The doors to yesterday's perks are closing fast. Before you know it, you will only get straight pay and that's about it. Take off from work early and they'll dock your pay. Go to the bathroom and you better bring your roll of toilet paper. Ask for a salary increase and get a blank stare or a chuckle.

Thankyou but I think for the advance payout of vacation starting 2017 ( that you haven't earned) you have to be above the age of 50 and have at least 10 years of service with the company.

I asked your question to HR when the new policy was rolled out a few weeks. I was told that you do not have to pay back for the vacation.

"owe the company any accrued vacation that you didn't actually earn"...interestingly I do not thick this is true....from my reading if you take it its yours. They will pay out "earned" vacation when you leave and give nothing for un-earned...but from my reading they will not claw back used unearned. The rules come out recently, so I am sure all the details are on the HR site....so do not take my word for it!

OP, if your plans were to quit in 2016, you wouldn't have to worry. Chevron considered your vacation "earned" on Jan 1. However, the rules on earned vacation changes for 2017. You will be able to take your entire "accrued" vacation allowance starting Jan 1, 2017, but if you quit voluntarily, you will owe the company any accrued vacation that you didn't actually earn. You'd have to pay any unearned vacation days back.
