Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Any other advice?

I'm fairly certain I'll be laid off. I took down my HR contact and colleagues contacts, and my resume is in check. Is there any other big to-dos to make the process less painful if/when it happens?

Also know that HR has been advising some supervisors to not give references to avoid corporate exposure. Out of loyalty to you, some people may still give them but you may want to do some homework around that if you plant to join the job market again.

Be advised that a lot of the advice in "mjt's" post is a really bad idea. You can't steal the SIM card from your phone or generate expenses after you've been notified without expecting repercussions. Your credit card will be cancelled the same day you are notified so having the number won't do you much good anyway. Keep it classy. Walk out with your own integrity in tact even if management's integrity has been in tatters for years now.

@Jhnkojo-1kvx Ask your HBRP during the notification meeting. He or she can give you instructions on how to port your number to a private account. You'll have to turn in your device, but the company is open to letting you keep your number with supervisor approval.

If you have a flex account , I believe you will need to spend the money in that account prior the end of the month you are released!

Get copies of your performance reviews, it'll help with doing you resume. Confirm that your last pay advice that they mail matches your T4 in the spring - mine didn't. Apparently I was given shares that I just can't seem to figure out where and was taxed on them.

I waited until after all my severance was paid to me before filling for unemployment to ensure there would be no questions about pay issues. Also I had taxes taken out of the unemployment check. Based on my situation, I chose cobra after evaluating my families situation.

Also, have a farewell message on you phone ready with contacts to send if you are called in. After being told you are gone and prior to handing over the phone hit send!

I was laid off last October, and it was quite the grind before latching on to another job, 7 months later.

If you have a mortgage, call your mortgage holder and see what assistance program they have. I was in a forebearance program that allowed me to make vastly reduced payments until I became employed again.

Health care is trickier issue. When the COP health care runs out, you can either go without and incur a tax penalty, pay rip-off fees for COBRA, or pick up health care on the marketplace.

You can apply for unemployment insurance straight away. You'll have to submit a payment request every two weeks, and acknowledge you're searching for a new job. The pay caps out pretty low (enough to pay COBRA!) and only lasts 6 months. Your lump sum payment will also factor into what you receive.

And have taxes taken off any unemployment insurance. I didn't and it was a nasty surprise doing my tax return.

Go to Your Benefit Resources and make sure you have your non-COP address, email and phone numbers set up. I just checked mine and it was all COP info, I changed it to my personal info.

Send a mass email to all your contacts with your personal email and phone number. We were explicitly told not to send mass emails, but who really cares when you have been fired? A lot of my colleagues didn't know I was let go.

-Make sure you copied the actual email address of any CoP colleagues you may want. Microsoft tends to save the internal routing address versus the actual email address.

-If you have an iphone, create a back up of the phone on your home computer. On the phone, set up call forwarding to ring your personal cell number. If they give you a few minutes before having you meet them in the conference room, pop out the sim card and keep it. You may want to try to keep the number.

-Keep your work voicemail password, so you can call in and change the greeting to have people call you on your cell. Can set up call forwarding if you don't want to miss any calls.

-Save all your work electronic files to external hard drive, or send them to Google drive account

  • If you have a credit card, copy the card. If you are let go, call to renew any memberships (SPE, etc), pay for upcoming lunch and learns, as well as register for any upcoming conferences that you would have gone to. These are important networking events. Keep it legitimate, you are still technically an employee for the remainder of the month.

-Use the outsourcing agency CoP pays for, but not right away as it is for a limited time. Take some time off, sign up after the holidays since it is difficult to get much done in way of interviews in Nov and Dec.

Good luck

Take home your personal items, clean out your desk, clean up emails. Get your information from HR Express - save PDFs of your performance agreements and email them home, make sure you know how to access benefits and retirement info from home. Prepare your reaction.
