Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

If you've been there 4-8 years and grades 6-8 you are probably massively underpaid

Since I'm on my way out the door ...

Here's a good exercise for you if you are still an employee after this round of the annual Hunger Games. Ask your manager what your CR is (unless you already know it). If they won't tell you then run. That's information they should freely share with you. For those that don't know CR is your Compensation Ratio. It is the Ratio of your current salary to the midpoint for the salary range for your region for your grade. So if you are a GL8 and the Midpoint for your regions is $100,000 and you are making $85,000 your CR is .85 if you are making $110,000 your CR is 1.1.

If you are below 1.0 you are massively underpaid.

I can tell you with absolute certainty that many college hires are being brought in at very high comp ratios. I had a new college hire with a CS Masters brought in at a GL6 1.1 comp ratio. This was very normal for new college hires. This college hire was making more than 3 people on my team: one with 4 years of exp at a GL8, one with 2.5 years at a GL6 and one with 8 years at GL 8. I lived in fear that they would be talking at lunch and figure out how underpaid they were and all walk out the door.

The simple reason for this is 4-8 years ago the economy s---ed and college hires got a lot less money. Now the economy is hot and to get the college hires you have to pay through the nose. But those that got hired at that low rate haven't seen the raises to account for the market.

Nothing against the college hire but I'd trade every one of them for this person based on their massive experience advantage.

And to stave off the questions, I couldn't give them more money because there was never budget to do so.

I can assure you it is not horse ****. I was literally looking at the salary information in HRMS when I wrote the original. If you and your colleagues got that little you were very poor negotiators.

This is horseshit.. Most of my GL4 colleagues got hired at $60k in RTP last year, but the new hires this year are 48k-54k for the same GL4 positions.

...and it's not just college hires. Up until the LR, we were hiring back a heap of people that left us over the previous year or two. They all came back with more money (and we are talking good percentages here), some with a grade bump - and one lady came back with a title as well.

All of the salary bands overlap and they overlap significantly. They have to. It's the only way they can promote people and give them 5% bumps on the promo.

As far as only considering base salary goes, that's really all there is. RSUs at those GLs are nonexistent. Bonus targets are GL6 - 8% and GL8 - 12% and GL 10 - 15%.

So best case between a 6 and an 8 is 4%SalaryCPF.

So say the GL8 is 85K and the new college hire is 86K (obviously not SJ numbers).

We'll use 1.0 as the IPF for both and a 1.3 CPF (company performance factor)

The GL8 gets 85000+ (85000.121.0*1.3) = 98,260

The New Hire GL6 gets 86000 + (86000.081.0*1.2)= 94944

So you are talking $3,316 total comp difference for 4 years of experience. Not a lot of reward for 4 years of experience now is it?

I'd rather not say what group I was in until I'm safely out the door with my separation payment in hand. I will say that all of those that were underpaid massively on my team were also impacted and the college hire was not...

I think it's pretty safe to say, that if you were here 4-6 years, you're underpaid regardless of grade.

But the story about new grad g6 being paid higher than g8 folks is interesting. I thought that such situation should never happen - at least if you consider only base salary. Do salary bands for different grades overlap?

And to the the OP - what group you are / were in?

I agree.

They need new college hires. But since all bay area companies are paying much higher pay than sysco, they have to offer more so the new college hires join in here.

I know a bunch of folks are stuck here due to H1b status else they would have long gone by now.
