Is anyone hoping for layoffs?

I can assure you from sad first hand experience that the earlier you are laid off from a failing company, the better off you are. It may not feel that way initially, but it is the best scenario. Early lay-offs are more likely to have a voluntary component. Take it - control your own destiny. Also- there is no labor law that requires that severance package be equal - or even that they be offered at all. Severance packages tend to shrink - or disappear all together - as a failing company runs out of cash. And, finally, the number of people riffed at any given time tends to grow later in the process, meaning that you will be competing with more people for a shrinking pool of jobs. Of course, this all assumes that you feel compelled to sit around and see what happens. Show a little initiative and go find something else NOW.

Voluntary again would be absolutely ideal.
