Thread regarding First Solar Inc. layoffs

For those ho haven't been given notice yet, there is a uneasy feel as to whether they are on 'the list"....

Most managers are using the excuse that "they haven't received the list" or "they had nothing to do with the list" or "there are multiple lists and they do not know which one they will be told to implement".... very cowardly excuses, but not surprising coming from some of the weaker talent in key positions. However there are a few mangers who have expressed this reality months ago and provided reasonable warning to employees so that they can plan accordingly....

Being told on almost a daily basis to update my resume and send it out is not making it easy to go to work everyday.

I'm one of the unfortunate production workers that was, how they put it?....impacted. Also know as laid off permanently and terminated!! No chance of getting called back. They offered us severance and pay as though we're working until the end of January. That softened the blow! I'll be ok for a little while.

It's not a matter of who, but when. I believe most lower level positions in the US are threatened by these "layoffs" in the end. I think they will continue to move business functions to Malaysia. I know everyone is nervous, and management, in the First Solar style, is very passive about it all, and I think they think they may save their own jobs by remaining quiet. Maybe factory workers will be recalled, but other positions, I doubt. If and when they do come around, I dont think the pay rates will be what they once were, they will devalue the positions and hire more contract staff. To me, seems they pay too much, throw too much money at their problems, and invest in technology they don't bother to do anything with (Tetrasun). Let's face it, it's another US manufacturer beat by the Chinese. First Solar keeps believing in a product (thin film) that doesn't have the margins it used to. They keep waiting to produce a product at a lower cost to the competition again... Year after year it's been the same story. Customers must be turning their heads away from them now too. I wish eveyone luck! Get out before they walk you out!
