Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

New job blues

I started working at Cisco last June. At first it was a great opportunity but last November my team moved under a new director and things are not going as they were when I first started. My coworker moved to another BU and he has been here for 9 years so it was a pretty smooth transition. For an employee with less than a year in this company can I be eligible to move to another BU?

Not that I followed my own advice, but, you might consider reaching out to others working in different BU's. You already have one contact - see if you can leverage that relationship. Cultivate those relationships and even offer to help them in their endeavors if possible. Find a good mentor, preferably senior level. Networking is the key. Oftentimes, it's who you know.

Listen to what rxo says. All I can say is watch where you jump. After joining Cisco a few years ago and spending my 18 months, I jumped to a more interesting job in a different BU. Bad move. The whole organization was laid off within a year of my move. Cisco is a very dysfunctional place. I regret not jumping ship earlier.

18 months is the minimum per the rules.

You're not eligible to move until after you've been in the BU for 1 year, at least in the US.

In my old BU, you could change teams within the BU to any open reqs, and I don't know if there were any time-in-position restrictions.

I don't know that changing teams will help you since you'll still be under the same director.

Good luck to you. Not much time between your 1-yr anniversary date and mid-Aug to change teams. Given how the process works, if you're going to be laid off in Aug during the next big cull, you'll already be on the list in June/July and they won't let you switch.

A year ago, I'd have said "Work hard, do a great job, and you'll be safe as long as they only decimate teams", but now they're not culling the bottom 5% and working hard and performing great no longer keeps you safe. I can certainly speak to that. :-( Now, all I can say is "Keep your eyes & ears open for opportunities, constantly network with people outside Cisco, and if a better opportunity comes along, jump ship IMMEDIATELY and don't wait for a package. It's always easier to find a new job while you have a job, even if you have the income from the severance package. There's something about the stigma of being currently unemployed that hurts your chances.
