Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Layoffs coming to H-1B workers and green card holders

Look out Chevron, you may have to include Non-US Citizens in your next round of ROM's:

Imagine an America that gave job preference to it's citizens over non-citizens?

@xcty, the point is that tech companies rely on sourcing talent from all over the world to have the most innovative companies based in the U.S. If we make immigration restrictions too strict, the tech talent will go to other countries, where there are increasingly better opportunities. It's not a zero sum game, where these companies will necessarily hire Americans proportionally to the visa restrictions. If we want more Americans to go into STEM fields, we ought to improve our education system and make targeted efforts towards getting more Americans into STEM fields. With the Trump administration's war on science, it's unlikely they will create programs to get more Americans into STEM fields. Instead they will keep trying to sell unrealistic stories like bringing back the coal industry while ignoring real threats to unemployment such as automation and skills shortages.

Not totally correct, wmho. The US is one Big Mother F of a world economy. You say if we don't import foreigners to make the US the cutting edge in technology, that we'll lose that talent to Europe and Asia? Here's a question back to you... Who is going to buy all the goods and services those supposed foreigners are going to produce? The US? I don't think so. We don't need to flood our country with too many foreigners, just pick and choose the best of the best in talent to stay very competitive. I'm tired of seeing 6 to 8 useless family members enter our country because we hired one talented foreigner.

An interesting perspective on H-1B visa restrictions: "The U.S. will lose much of its competitive edge in the global tech wars almost immediately. Skilled foreigners won't apply for jobs in the U.S., fearing unfair treatment at the hands of a mercurial White House. Those who seek visas may not get in. European and Asian companies will begin to snap up the top talent Silicon Valley is getting today. And a window of opportunity will open for European and Asian technology firms to catch up to U.S. behemoths."https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2017-03-07/trump-s-h1-b-squeeze-threatens-u-s-tech-leadership

One of the main reasons that jobs will be fewer in American manufacturing going forward is due to automation. This is something that Trump does not mention, instead he blames all problems on outsourcing. Here's an article on how it's affecting O&G: http://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/energy/article/Fewer-jobs-in-oil-patch-as-automation-picks-up-10812124.php

If we don't have a plan to deal with employment disruption from automation, we will be in trouble.

War on Christmas? Rubbish. If someone thinks there's a war on Christmas in the US, then they are free to leave. Think taxes are too high. You can leave. Don't like Obamacare, just leave. Don't like Chevron management, there are plenty of other companies out there. What a great solution for everyone's complaints about anything. Now let's get back to real life.

@oqpt, since 9/11 there has been a growth in right-wing media that fuels Islamophobia and makes its audience feel like Christianity is under attack (e.g. the so-called war on Christmas) and that the Obama administration was overly sympathetic to Muslims. Many speculated that Obama was Muslim, without any supporting evidence. I think that's one of the reasons that Trump won, in that he ran a campaign based on xenophobia and anti-Muslim messaging, with an all around fear-based, anti-immigrant message, which was fueled by right-wing media. I'm sure that most Muslims would not agree with you that Islam has been promoted in post 9/11 America. Most Muslims feel under attack in America, especially after Trump's election.

ohfd - up until 911, this country was very much a Christian majority country and still is today. Only since 911, the powers to be are pushing Islam and Muslim values more than it had ever been seen. The question is "Why"?

Actually the values that our country is based on were from the Enlightenment, which was a rediscovery of values from ancient civilizations like Greece. The Bible had little to do with it. In fact it was a turning away from church doctrine.

With Betsy DeVos running the Dept of Education and Jerry Falwell Jr. leading a task force on higher ed, Trump is giving Christian conservatives much of what they want. Like it or not, America is not a Christian nation, but is one of freedom of religion.

That's right -nsjn, yet in recent years since 9-11, it seems our government and all left leaning organizations here and around the world want to block out Christianity on all fronts and bring Islam and Muslims to the forefront. Why is the fierce bias and clash of civilizations so obvious in the USA?

The Declaration of Independence contains four allusions to the God of the Bible. The U.S. Constitution contains allusions to the freedom to practice the Christian religion unimpeded, the significance and priority of Sunday worship, as well as the place of Jesus Christ in history. Amen.

Every nation or government is inherently based on some religion or set of beliefs and values. The values that have made the US great are rooted in the Bible.

-nbna, The US founding fathers didn't reference anything about Abraham, Mohammed, Allah or Sharia. Make no mistake - this country was founded on Judeo-Christian values, even though the founding fathers deliberately left it out of The Constitution.

The idea that the US is a "Christian nation" is just something that the right has fabricated to try to justify special privileges for Christians. If the US was founded as a Christian nation wouldn't the founding fathers have included something more than a circumspect reference to a "creator" in the D. of I. (which was there because is was a letter to King George, who was religious) and no reference to religion except in the negative sense (no religious test, no establishment of religion) in the Constitution? Absolutely not a single reference to Jesus or a Savior anywhere to be found in our founding documents. Seems like an odd oversight if you're founding a "Christian nation." You'd think they'd have put something about "our Savior" in the very first sentence. And, of course, there's the Treaty of Tripoli, signed in 1796 by none other than John Adams, which states explicitly in Article 11 "As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion"

9nap, our U.S. currency does not have "One nation under God" written on it. It does have "In God We Trust".

"Separation of church and state" is a phrase used by Thomas Jefferson and others expressing an understanding of the intent and function of the Establishment Clause and Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States which reads: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."

The phrase "separation of church and state" is generally traced to a January 1, 1802 letter by Thomas Jefferson, addressed to the Danbury Baptist Association in Connecticut, and published in a Massachusetts newspaper.

@9nap, please check your facts - "separation of church and state" appears NOWHERE in the US constitution. Denying the very foundations that USA was built upon will lead us nowhere. Trump is simply trying to enforce the laws of the constitution which he swore to uphold .

@kh1b, we agree on one thing, this is no joking matter. You obviously feel justified in your criticisms of Obama, but then suggest that the negative characterizations of Trump are not justified. One of the great things about America is the First Amendment. We all have freedom of speech. I will say that Trump, Bannon, Miller etc. are the greatest threat to American democracy, global stability and the environment that we have seen from an American administration. Trump himself is either a pathological liar or he is delusional. Neither one is acceptable for an American president.

@kbir, Yes I did. I got behind President Obama initially. But he convinced me after ending his second year of his first term and all throughout his second term in office, he was no more than a Divider-In-Chief and a socialist. He convinced me that he despised our country and disrespected the US Constitution of our founding fathers. How can any American get behind any person like that?

Don't try to be clever or cute, @kbir. This is no joking matter. Trump is not the Anti-Christ that the Leftists in denial want to paint him as, he's really the Anti-Obama. Thank God.

So America is great when things are going well for me? I don't think that's the best metric. How about when the country is united, when the American dream is alive, when there is economic and social mobility? When we have good relations with allies and strong economic cooperation. When we have leadership respected by other countries and we solve disputes without spending trillions on things unnecessary wars? After four years of this administration, the best we can hope for is that we don't have Armageddon and no civil war.

@iukg, That's a question you need to answer for yourself. You'll know when things are better for "You". That same question needs to answered by every other person for "Themself". I suppose when you have a majority of Americans reaching the consensus that "America is great, again", then we can we know for sure.

There is a long-standing concerted effort and conspiracy in the United States to lower the standard of living and pay of most American workers. This has been most evident in recent years with the disparity in wealth, erosion of middle class and the boom in millionaires and billionaires. The rich are getting richer and the middle class is shrinking. The influx of foreigners (mainly on H1B visas) is a big reason for the decline of average pay in STEM jobs.
