Psst! Somebody tell S.M.: The Next Big Thing in Smartphones? The Software

Nearly a decade after taking off, the smartphone is at a turning point.

Advances in hardware have become incremental, and growth in handset sales has largely stalled. But the development of software and services on the phone is booming, driven largely by advances in artificial intelligence, expanding what the devices are capable of and making them increasingly indispensable.

The change is roiling the industry. Slowing growth has intensified a market share war in China and has pitted Huawei Technologies Co.—the world’s third largest smartphone maker—more directly against market leaders Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics globally.

It also is a major reason behind chip giant Qualcomm Inc.’s pending purchase of NXP Semiconductors NV for $39 billion, as it looks to diversify beyond supplying chips for smartphones. And it is the reason Apple—famed for its hardware—is boasting about growth in its services.

Yes, grass always looks greener somewhere else, but it is someone else's grass. Qualcomm is a hardware company and there will always be a market for processors and wireless modems and of course you put them in cars, mobile phones and other consumer electronics. Of course every hardware company should have some footprint in software (and software company in hardware) to have a feeling and to interface it better, but not so much that it loses the direction. Otherwise we'll end up as Google with their 28 focus areas. They think hardware is the same as software, just they forget to model some unimportant parameters: eg. gravity in drones, laws of physics in autonomous driving etc. Though we also have some share of fantasy: like that masive MIMO bulshit: there are two polarizations, and there is already too many antennas in selfphone. Wireless research field is taken over by matematicians, and most of them have no contact with reality - that is why we have those money burning projects.

QC doesn't know how to sell SW. They need to pull a MS if they want to survive.
