Thread regarding Lowe's Cos. layoffs

What it's really like

It's been widely reported that Lowe's was/is going to hire more employees at the store level. This is not the case at my store. We have many part -time employees working full time hours as the store isn't hiring anyone. They aren't even posting these jobs.

The PSI and PSE people sit around hardly working while the sales staff on the floor gets called on the carpet about getting them leads. We were told one lead a week or we would be written up. Same thing for the Lowe's credit cards, one new credit app a week or be written up. Cashiers have the same thing with the product protection plans and I thought it was my job to help customers "Love Where They Live."

Our new credit coordinator is a pimply-faced 19 year old kid that was given the job over a woman old enough to be his mother. She worked in all areas of the front end since the store opened. The "service managers" are the most inexperienced managers that the store has, all of our older, experienced managers were passed over when deciding on the service managers. One former DM has already left for Home Depot, another went to work for D--k's Sporting Goods, and several more have resumes out looking to leave.

A lot of the new hires spend more time in the break room than they do on the sales floor and no one (management) seems to care. Others leave early whenever they want and again management doesn't seem to care. Rules and policies are only enforced for certain employees but not all. If you're young and pretty you don't have to work hard.

Finally, our store manager is store manage (a woman) is constantly on her personal cell phone with her friends or children that can't behave. At least we don't have her two boys that constantly fight calling mom on the store phone to settle an argument.

Visited my local Lowe's today and the plants were awful looking. They don't bother watering them. The cashier told me they constantly mark the plants down. Another told me that an ASM said Lowe's had only pennies in each plant so it was not a big deal if they died or were marked down. With that explanation why would anyone even bother to water the plants? I saw a women getting deal on plants like Hydrangeas that were in desperate need of watering. Plants that she was getting at a great discount and will perk up as soon as she waters them at home. What a sh-- show.

Good post.

We heard the same thing here at my store in south Florida: more employees...it hasn't happened. We are actually down FT staff and up in PT seasonal (no benefits) positions.

The new area managers are all stressed out, and two are applying for jobs at Home Depot. Another just quit and they haven't replaced him. Credit card applications are down, and the credit card "guy" at our store is wandering around asking everyone to explain credit card options to him, and then making them sign a paper saying they've been told about it. I just b---s--- my way through it, signed the paper, and went on with my business. I don't ask them if they want to sign up for a credit card....they know they exist, and if they ask, then I'll tell them. I hate being pitched sh-- I know exist but don't want, so I won't do it to others.

Everybody says the economy is doing great and that FT work is up...b---s---. Let me explain.

At my store, there are many workers that are FT and PT that do exactly the same job for the same amount of hours. Some have benefits, some don't. We have many temporary FT people (like me!) who've been there more than a year and have no benefits and have gotten no raises. The PT guy hired at the same time as me has benefits but we work anywhere between 15-39 hours depending on what Lowe's wants. Yet he's PT and I'm FT. When the labor dept. gets the data from Lowe's it looks like I'm FT, but that's not the case...

And my "bonus" this quarter was $50! Woo hoo! Wow, but since my hours are down, I've actually earned less money this month. I work my a-- off for this company and I used to care, but I don't anymore. Now I don't do all the little things that no one ever noticed, but now they do because they don't get done. I noticed items in the wrong place, mis-priced, need sales stickers, etc. but I don't correct any of it unless a manager notices. You want to treat me like dirt, then I'll return the favor.

To Hell with Lowe's.
